Discover the 9 most UNIQUE riads in Tangier offering authentic Moroccan charm and hospitality with my hand-picked guide. Explore my favorite stays near the Kasbah! I first visited Tangier as a kid, during summer holidays in Cádiz with my godparents. We’d often take the ferry from Tarifa for a long day trip across the strait — and it felt like stepping into another world. Specially as a child.

Years later, when my cousin Rocío, now founder of REA Arquitectura, acted as the architect for the breathtaking Tazi Palace (now the ultra-luxurious Fairmont), I returned with fresh eyes, not a kid anymore, and completely fell for the city — its rhythm, colors, and beautiful contrasts.

Since then, I’ve come back a few times more and always choose to stay in a riad — there’s just something magical about waking up in a tiled courtyard, sipping mint tea on a terrace, and hearing the distant call to prayer echo across the rooftops.

If you're looking for that feeling too, you're in the right place — let me show you some of the most beautiful and unique riads in Tangier that I’d recommend to a close friend.

9 UNIQUE Riads in Tangier for a Local Experience

Getting to and Around Tangier

How to get to Tangier, Morocco

Getting to Tangier by Air:

Getting to Tangier by Ferry:

  • Coming from southern Spain? The ferry is a popular and scenic option, and lot's of fun! I love ferries.

    • Ferries Tangier to Tarifa: High-speed ferries (about 1 hour) run frequently and arrive at Tangier Ville Port, right next to the old medina. This is the most convenient and what we normally do when we are on holiday in the South of Spain.

    • Algeciras tangier Ferry: Ferries from Algeciras take around 1.5–2 hours and arrive at Tangier Med Port, which is about 45 minutes by car from the city. You'll need a taxi or shuttle to reach town.

    • Ferry Malaga Tangier: As of April 2025, there are no direct ferry services operating between Málaga and Tangier. The historic ferry route connecting Málaga to North Africa was discontinued in January 2025 after more than a century of service. Very sad!

Getting to Tangier by Train:

The new Al Boraq high-speed train also connects Casablanca and Tangier in just 2 hours, making it a great option for travelers short on time. Morocco’s train network is comfortable and quite affordable. You can take a train to Tangier from:

  • Casablanca (approx. 5h)

  • Rabat (approx. 4h)

  • Fez (approx. 5h)

  • Marrakech (via Casablanca, approx. 9h)

Getting to Tangier By Bus:

For budget travelers or those heading from smaller towns like Chefchaouen or Asilah, buses are a reliable choice.

  • CTM and Supratours are the main companies and offer comfortable, air-conditioned coaches.

  • You can also take a grand taxi (shared taxi) for shorter distances — they’re faster but less comfortable, and you’ll be sharing with other passengers.

Getting to Tangier By Private Transfer:

For a more direct and private option, you can hire a Private Transfer. While more expensive than the bus or the train, it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience, as you can leave when is more convenient to you. This is what we do often when traveling in big groups or with family, although sometimes only 1 way. We usually use this private transfers website to book, but in Morocco we can also recommend this trusted private transfer company that we used on our last trips and it always works well: Medtours. +212638774327 - medtoursmaroc.com.

Renting a Car in Tangier, Morocco

Car hire Tangier airport: Renting a car at Tangier Airport is a great option if you want the freedom to explore northern Morocco at your own pace or if you plan to do a roadtrip around the country!

Make sure to bring your passport, a valid driver’s license, and a credit card. Driving around Tangier is relatively easy, and having a car makes it simple to visit nearby spots like Chefchaouen, Asilah, or the stunning Cap Spartel.

While not a traditional Riad, I couldn’t leave the Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier off this list. This luxury hotel in Tangier feels more like a hidden palace in the hills than a typical stay — and I have a personal connection to it, which makes it even more special. My cousin Rocío worked on the design and decoration of the entire space, and she truly brought it to life. Lalla Soulika is one of my favorites riads in Tangier! Blending elegance with heartfelt hospitality, this riad is set in a beautifully restored historical building near the Medina and Kasbah and it offers spacious suites with lovely living areas, and rich Moorish decor. I personally loved the rooftop terrace, where a generous breakfast—complete with pastries, fruit, yogurt, and eggs to order—is served with panoramic views of Tangier and the sea. Other Things to Know before visiting Tangier, Morocco

𑁍 Top Things to Do in Tangier Morocco:

Tangier is a city where cultures meet — and that mix is what makes it so special. Start your day wandering the Medina, a maze of narrow streets filled with colorful shops, local cafés, and artisan boutiques. Don’t miss the Kasbah, with its beautiful architecture and stunning views over the Strait of Gibraltar.

Head to the American Legation Museum for a dose of history, then relax with a mint tea at the famous Café Hafa, perched on a cliffside overlooking the sea, I loved the view! If you have time or you are spending several days, visit the Caves of Hercules and take a walk along Achakar Beach for a change of scenery. Whether you're into art, food, or history, Tangier has a little bit of everything.

𑁍 Best Time to Visit Tangier, Morocco

The best time to visit Tangier is spring (April to June) and fall (September to November) when the weather is warm and pleasant without the summer crowds. These months are perfect for exploring the medina, enjoying the coast, and relaxing in open-air riads. Summers can be hot, while winters are mild but occasionally rainy, but if you live in Europe, winter is probably a good time to visit too, as it is not as cold, or if you are precisely trying to escape the European cold, like I usually do in winter!

𑁍 Frequently Asked Questions - What People Ask about Tangier is…

Chefchaouen to tangier

The distance from Chefchaouen to Tangier is about 115 km (71 miles). By car or taxi, it takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. You can also take a CTM or local bus, which takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on the route and stops. The road is scenic, winding through the Rif Mountains—so sit back and enjoy the views! Is tangier worth visiting?

Absolutely! Tangier is a fascinating mix of cultures, where Europe meets Africa and the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It’s less hectic than Marrakech and feels more laid-back—perfect for a few days of slow exploration, good food, and coastal breezes. If you're into culture, design, or simply want to experience a different side of Morocco, Tangier is definitely worth it.

Algeciras tangier ferry

The ferry from Algeciras to Tangier takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the type of ferry and weather conditions. Fast ferries go to Tangier Ville (city center), while others dock at Tangier Med, which is about 45 minutes from the city by car or shuttle.

2 days in tangier

Spending 2 days in Tangier gives you just enough time to soak in its unique blend of European and Moroccan influences. Wander the whitewashed medina, visit the Kasbah Museum, sip mint tea with ocean views at Café Hafa, and explore the historic American Legation. On day two, head to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules for some nature and myth, then enjoy sunset views from a rooftop riad. Tangier is small enough to explore on foot but full of charm and surprises!

Beaches in tangier

Tangier has some lovely beaches right near the city, like Plage Municipale and Malabata Beach, both great for a walk or a quick swim. For quieter spots, head a bit out of town to Achakar Beach, near the Caves of Hercules, or Dalia Beach, which is more local and peaceful.

Is tangier safe

Yes, Tangier is generally safe for tourists, especially in popular areas like the medina, corniche, and beach zones. Like in any city, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid empty streets at night, and keep an eye on your belongings.
