As a Spanish native from Madrid, I’ve had the privilege of sailing to Formentera every summer, and I can confidently say that it’s one of the most enchanting places in the Mediterranean. For sure the Balearic islands are my favorite islands in the Mediterranean!
While arriving by boat offers a special sense of adventure, exploring the island by land is equally incredible. I spend part of the year in Mallorca, so we often visit Formentera, and each time we return, we fall in love with it all over again. The island’s pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and super nice atmosphere make it the perfect destination for a long-weekend getaway from anywhere in Europe!

Formentera is a paradise island that offers stunning beaches, diverse landscapes, and a relaxed atmosphere. Renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sands, Formentera boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, from popular spots like Ses Illetes to secluded coves waiting to be discovered.
When I bring friends here from abroad, they really say most of them have never seen a sea water and beaches as beautiful as the ones in Formentera!
Beyond its beaches, the island’s pine forests, salt flats, and rugged coastline provide opportunities for hiking, cycling, or simply taking in the views.
Compared to its neighboring party island, Ibiza, Formentera exudes a laid-back and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying authentic Spanish cuisine in traditional whitewashed villages.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities to enjoy, from snorkeling and diving to kayaking and paddle boarding. Easily accessible by ferry from Ibiza, Formentera offers a convenient day trip from Ibiza or preferably weekend getaway to experience a different side of the Balearic Islands.
In my opinion, Formentera is a Spanish destination well worth exploring for its natural beauty and authenticity!!
Getting to and Around Formentera, Spain
How to get to Formentera
To get to Formentera, you must take a ferry from Ibiza, as Formentera doesn’t have its own airport. This is the ferry we usually take and can recommend!
The most common way to get to Formentera is to fly into Ibiza Airport, then take a taxi (about 20 minutes) or bus (Line 10) to the ferry terminal in Ibiza Town. I usually fly to Ibiza with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia — they offer great deals and frequent flights from mainland Spain and major European cities.
From there, regular ferries operate to Formentera throughout the day. Depending on the ferry type, the journey takes between 30 minutes (fast ferry) and 1 hour (standard ferry). This is the route we usually take and it’s always smooth and scenic!
Once you arrive in La Savina, the port of Formentera, getting around is easy: you can rent a car, scooter, or bicycle, or use the island’s public bus system, which connects nearly all major beaches and villages. If you’re visiting in summer or shoulder seasons, we recommend booking your transport in advance, especially scooters and bikes.
Renting a car in Formentera
🚗 Renting a car or a motorbike is the best way to explore Formentera and what we always do when we visit by land! So I highly recommend having a car, motorbike or bike to move around the island freely. It is a very small island so it is easy to drive around!

Best areas to stay in Formentera
- Es Pujols – Lively area with beach bars, restaurants, and shops. Great for nightlife and convenience.
- Migjorn Beach area – Quiet and scenic, ideal for relaxing stays by the sea with great beach restaurants. This is one of my favorite areas to stay in Formentera.
- Sant Francesc Xavier – Charming inland town with boutique hotels, cafés, and a local vibe.
- La Savina – Best for short stays or easy ferry access; close to the port and some great restaurants. You can also walk to many places from here or take the bus This is a very convenient place to stay if are not going to rent a car.
- Cala Saona – Peaceful and romantic, perfect for couples looking for sunsets and calm waters. Very cool too!
Formentera travel guide: 3 day itinerary
A long weekend in Formentera is the perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and natural beauty. From sun-drenched beaches and turquoise waters to charming villages and scenic green routes, this Formentera travel guide will help you plan the ultimate 3-day escape to one of Europe’s most beautiful islands.
Day 1: Arrival and Beach Time at Ses Illetes
- Afternoon: Once you arrive in La Savina port, rent a mean of transport or check directly into your hotel — whether you’re staying in Es Pujols, Sant Francesc, or by the coast in Migjorn. Then head straight to Playa de Ses Illetes, my absolute favorite beach in Formentera.
The turquoise waters and soft white sand are just unbeatable. One of the things I love most is that you can walk all the way to the tip of the island and even reach Espalmador at low tide — it feels like you’re walking into a dream.
Depending on the wind direction, locals know to choose one side of the island or the other — Illetes is usually calm, but if it’s windy, you might prefer Levante Beach on the opposite shore. - Sunset: For your first dinner, I highly recommend Es Molí de Sal, a beautiful beach restaurant with panoramic views over the sea — it’s not only my favorite restaurant on the island, but also one I love visiting any time of day. The sunset views are magical, and the food never disappoints. If you’re a seafood lover, try the pasta with lobster — it’s one of my top dishes. Honestly, all the fish here is excellent!!
Day 2: Exploring the Island
- Morning: Start your day with breakfast at your hotel or a local café. I personally love grabbing a coffee and toast at a small terrace in La Savina or Sant Francesc Xavier — the heart of the island, but they are lovely cafes all around!
Make your way east to visit the iconic La Mola Lighthouse. The road there (one of the Green Routes) offers scenic views, and once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas over the cliffs and sea. It’s one of the most peaceful and natural corners of Formentera — and a favorite photo stop of mine. - Lunch: Head back down and stop for lunch at a beach bar — two of my go-tos are Es Codol Foradat (LOVE IT!) and Tanga (LOVE IT TOO!), both beautiful, with fresh seafood and unbeatable locations on the beach. After eating, take some time to relax and swim in those clear waters at Migjorn beach if you had lunch at Es Codol Foradat. Tanga is in Ses Illetes, where I recommended visiting yesterday!

- Afternoon: In the afternoon, wander through Sant Francesc Xavier, the island’s charming capital. Pop into little shops, grab a gelato, and sip a coffee in the main square. I always find something new and cute every time I visit.
- Sunset: In the evening, head to the famous Cap de Barbaria lighthouse. The view over the sea at sunset is just spectacular — and feels like the edge of the world. For a livelier scene, another option is Beso Beach, or enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail at Can Carlitos, one of our absolute favorite Formentera restaurants right on the water in La Savina.
- Dinner: Return to Es Pujols or Sant Francesc for dinner. I personally love La Tortuga for its relaxed vibe, Ritmo Formentera for creative Mediterranean dishes, or Macondo for a casual pizza night. And if you missed Can Carlitos earlier — now’s your chance!

- Drinks: If you’re up for a bit of dancing or a cocktail, head to Pachachá — one of Formentera’s fun nighttime spots with a mix of locals and travelers. It is my favorite place to go for drinks after dinner!
Day 3: Beach Day and Farewell
- Morning: On your final morning in Formentera, I recommend slowing things down and soaking up the island’s peaceful vibe. One of the best ways to do this is by visiting a less crowded beach like Cala Saona — its little cove, framed by red cliffs and clear turquoise waters, feels almost cinematic in the early light.
- Another favorite of mine is Playa de Migjorn, which stretches along the southern coast. Depending on the wind (a constant element to consider in Formentera!), you can usually find a calm, sheltered spot on one side of the island or the other.
- Lunch: When it’s time for lunch, Kiosko 62 is always a fun and lively choice. It’s super relaxed, right by the beach, and has great energy — especially on summer weekends. We’ve had so many long, happy lunches there with friends, toes in the sand and a cold drink in hand. Another classic for a last day is Tanga, near Ses Illetes, which offers a more classic beach restaurant vibe and a great seafood menu. We always ask for the lubina a la sal (sea bass baked in salt) — it’s one of our all-time favorite dishes on the island. Perfect to share with a view of the sea and the breeze in your hair.

- Afternoon: After lunch, take your time. This is the moment to really feel the rhythm of Formentera — swim a little more, sunbathe at the beach where you have had just lunch, or just lie back in a hammock or on a towel and watch the world go by. If your hotel has a pool, this is your chance for one last dip and a bit of quiet before packing up.
- Departure: Before heading to the ferry, we always make one final stop: a drink at Hostal La Savina. Their terrace looks out over the Estany des Peix, and the light here in the late afternoon is pure magic. It’s the perfect way to say adiós to this beautiful island — at least until next summer!

The best time to visit Formentera is during the late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is warm but not excessively hot, making it ideal for enjoying the island’s stunning beaches and outdoor activities. Additionally, the island is less crowded compared to the peak summer months.
May and June offer pleasant temperatures, blooming flowers, and clear skies, making it a great time for beachgoers and nature lovers.
September and October also provide warm weather and are perfect for enjoying the beaches, as well as hiking and exploring the island’s natural beauty.
Visiting during these shoulder seasons also means you may find better deals on accommodation and activities compared to the peak summer months.
However, if you prefer the lively atmosphere and warm waters for swimming, July and August are the peak months for tourism in Formentera.
