How to get to Split

Getting to Split by Air

  • By Plane: Split has an international airport about 25 km from the city center. You can fly directly from many European cities, especially during the tourist season. From the airport, you can take a bus, taxi, or shuttle to reach the city center. You can also take a private transfer here.

Getting to Split by Train or Bus

Split is connected by train to major Croatian cities like Zagreb and Rijeka. Trains are scenic but can sometimes be slower than buses. I love trains so for me the train is always the most comfortable ways to arrive.

I use this app when I travel by train around Europe (even when going from country to country) and it is so easy!! I love having all my tickets in the same place.

Long-distance buses from other Croatian cities and neighboring countries are frequent, comfortable, and usually cheaper than trains. I usually buy them in the same site where I buy my train tickets.

Getting to Split by Ferry

Split is a major ferry hub, linking the city to islands like Hvar, Brač, and Vis, as well as to Italy (Ancona, Bari, and more). Get your tickets to get to Split by ferry here.

Renting a Car in Split

You don’t really need a car to explore Split itself, as the Old Town is compact and easy to navigate on foot.

However, I highly recommend renting a car for a road trip around Croatia—having your own vehicle makes it easy to discover stunning coastal towns, hidden beaches, and breathtaking national parks at your own pace. Always a great idea when exploring a country!

Split is a city that really has something for everyone, and where you stay can shape your whole trip. Because we sail there often, flying from Madrid and staying before and after our trips, we know Split really well. Here’s a quick guide to the three main areas I always recommend:

Old Town

Old Town is the heart of Split. If you love wandering through cobblestone streets, stumbling upon historic squares, and feeling the city’s energy, this is the spot for you. Staying here means you’re steps away from Diocletian’s Palace, little cafés, and all the main attractions. It’s full of character, and the hotels here are often in historic buildings that make your stay feel extra special.

Riva Waterfront

The Riva area is all about the sea. You’ll wake up to views of the Adriatic, enjoy long walks along the promenade, and have a ton of cafés and restaurants right outside your door. It’s perfect if you want a mix of luxury and that classic Mediterranean vacation vibe. This is my go-to if I want mornings by the water and evenings people-watching along the promenade.

Bačvice Beach

Bačvice is where you go for a more relaxed, beachy vibe. The neighborhood is modern, easy-going, and just steps from the famous Bačvice beach. It’s great if you want a mix of sun, sand, and city life. You can go swimming in the morning, grab coffee in a café, and still be close enough to Old Town for evening strolls.

Briig Boutique Hotel is one of my favorite places where to stay in Split, just by Bačvice beach and a short walk to Diocletian’s Palace. We stayed here in low season and loved it, much calmer and more affordable than summer. The design is stunning, the rooftop pool has amazing views, and breakfast was unforgettable, with Prosecco even. The rooms are super comfortable with thoughtful details. Highly recommend visiting in low season for the best experience!

Absolutely! Split offers a rich blend of history, culture, and stunning Adriatic views. From the ancient Diocletian’s Palace to vibrant markets and beautiful beaches, there’s something for every traveler. It. is also the main city from which we depart every time we sail in Croatia.

2. What is the best time to visit Split?

In my opinion, the ideal months are May to June and September to October. These shoulder seasons provide warm temperatures, swimmable seas, and fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months. It is similar to what I recommend about Mallorca, where I live part of the year.

3. How many days should I spend in Split?

A minimum of 3 days allows you to explore the historic center, enjoy some beach time, and take one day trip. For a more relaxed pace with multiple excursions to nearby islands and attractions. For me, 5-7 days is ideal. 

4. How do I get from Split to Dubrovnik?

You can travel by bus, car, or ferry. The journey takes approximately 4-5 hours by car or bus. Ferries are also available but may take longer. You can also take a private transfer if you prefer here.

5. Are there Ubers in Split?

No, Uber is not available in Split. However, there are local taxi services and private transfers you can use for getting around the city.

6. Is it safe to drink tap water in Split?

Yes, the tap water in Split is safe to drink and meets EU standards. It’s clean, fresh, and widely available.

The official currency is the Croatian Kuna (HRK). However, some places also accept euros, especially in tourist areas. I usually use credit cards, specially Revolut.
