So, what exactly is a riad? It’s basically a traditional Moroccan house with an inner courtyard, usually filled with plants, fountains, and a peaceful atmosphere. Sometimes they have a small pool too.

Most riads have just a few rooms, so it feels more personal and intimate than a big hotel. For me what makes it super authentic is that many have been beautifully restored and are run by local families, which makes your stay feel special.

Getting to and Around Marrakech

How to get to Marrakech in Morocco

Getting to Marrakech is easy, whether you’re coming from within Europe or further abroad. The Marrakech Menara Airport is the main international airport, with direct flights from major cities like Paris, Madrid, London, and many others. We usually fly with Iberia Airlines from Madrid!

Once you land, the city center is just a 15–20 minute drive away by taxi or airport transfer.

If you’re already in Morocco, you can reach Marrakech by train, bus, or car from cities like Casablanca, Rabat, or Fes. Trains are reliable and comfortable, and Supratours or CTM buses are great options for budget-friendly travel.

Getting to Marrakech By Private Transfer:

If you are coming from other cities in Morocco or you prefer a private transfer from the airport, you can hire a Private Transfer. While more expensive than the bus or the train (if coming from other cities), it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience, as you can leave when is more convenient to you.

If you’re heading to Marrakech and want a calm place that’s still super central, Riad Helen is a great choice. It’s in the Dar El Bacha district, just a short walk from the souks and main sights, but much quieter than other parts of the medina. The staff are amazing, the decor is beautiful, and breakfast on the rooftop is a treat.

Riad l’Oiseau du Paradis in Marrakech is a little oasis just 10 minutes from Jemaa el-Fnaa. Gorgeous decor, super kind staff, and a peaceful vibe that feels miles away from the chaos. The rooftop is lovely (with a view of the Koutoubia Mosque), breakfast is very good (difficult not to like Moroccan breakfasts here, really), the pool is heated and the whole place smells amazing.

The decor is beautiful, the rooftop’s perfect for tea at sunset and the staff go above and beyond they are very kind. Rooms are cozy, breakfast is tasty, and the vibe is calm and welcoming. Riad Le Limoun is one of my favorite budget riads in Marrakech, super calm, beautifully decorated (I know, all on this list are so beautiful), and just a short walk from the souks. so also super well located The staff is warm and helpful and the breakfast is also amazing. There’s a rooftop with comfy sun beds and a little spa that feels like the perfect plan to me after exploring the city for the whole day! Perfect too for large groups.

Riad Zeitoun Palace is a beautiful place just inside the Medina. It is walking distance to all the main sites as well as nice restaurants. The space is exactly like in the pictures and breakfast is amazing! In addition, I always love finding unique places to stay where you can meet the owners, it makes the stay extra special. In this case, Ismail is always one step ahead in making sure if you stay here you have everything you need.

I stayed in Riad Dar Eternity for a long weekend in 2022 with friends from Spain and we felt completely at home from the moment we arrived; every detail was taken care of with genuine warmth and professionalism. The riad is spotless and beautifully designed. It’s 17 minutes to Djemaa El Fna by foot and Mamadou and Siad were very nice to us, meeting people like them is what makes a stay truly special! Riad Dar El Qadi is a beautifully restored riad just a 10-minute walk from Jamaâ El Fna. It was brought back to life by Quentin Wilbaux, an architect who’s been living in Marrakech for over 30 years and is known for preserving the soul of traditional riads. The rooms are full of character, inspired by Berber design, and overlook a peaceful patio. There’s also a traditional hammam on site.

I wanted to finish the list with Riad Le Pèlerin because I visited them last winter and loved the atmosphere. Even though prices can go up to around €150 in high season, I thought it was still worth including. It doesn’t have a pool, which wasn’t an issue for us in winter, but good to know if that’s important to you!

The rooftop beautiful, the team couldn’t be more welcoming and it is close to everything. You just have to keep in mind that cars can’t access the front door, so you have to walk around 5 minutes from the nearest taxi point.

𑁍 Best Time to Visit the best budget riads in Marrakech, Morocco

The best time to visit Marrakech is during the spring months of March to May and the fall months of September to November.

During these periods, the weather is generally pleasant with warm days and cooler nights, making it ideal for exploring the city!

  • Spring (March to May): This is a popular time to visit as the weather is very nice and comfortable for outdoor activities. The city comes alive with blooming flowers, and it’s a great time to explore the gardens and take day trips to nearby attractions like the Atlas Mountains or spending one night in the desert at a beautiful Agafay desert camp.
  • Fall (September to November): Similar to spring, fall offers mild temperatures, making it another excellent time to visit Marrakech. Both fall and spring can be considered high season.

I would avoid visiting during the summer months (mid-June to August) if possible, as temperatures can soar well above 40°C (104°F), making sightseeing and outdoor activities challenging.

Winter (December to February) can also be a good time to visit, although it can get quite cold in the evenings, especially in December and January. I have visited Marrakech during all seasons and I would definitely visit in winter before visiting in summer.

If you ever get the chance, I truly believe everyone should try spending a night in the desert at least once!
