Getting to and Around Athens, Greece

Getting to Athens is very easy, especially from Madrid, where I usually fly with airlines like Iberia or Vueling. Once you arrive, the city is surprisingly easy to get around, most of the main sights are within walking distance in the center.

For longer distances, the metro is clean and efficient (and even connects directly to the airport), while taxis and ride apps are also very affordable. That said, one of the best ways to experience Athens is simply by walking and getting lost in its streets.

Mona Athens is one of those places that feels instantly cool but still really warm and personal at the same time. The design is this mix of industrial, artistic, and cozy, and every detail feels intentional without being overdone. The rooftop is a highlight, perfect for breakfast or a late drink and the atmosphere up there is just really special, especially with those city views. I made a point to visit the bakery at Ergon Bakehouse the last time I was in Athens and honestly, it tells you everything you need to know about the place. The concept is so well done, with a beautifully designed space and an incredible selection of pastries and high-quality breakfast dishes.

It’s right in the center, super walkable, and has a really cool vibe! From what I saw (and tasted), it’s one of those spots that perfectly blends design, food, and atmosphere and I totally get why people love staying here. More of a boutique B&B than a traditional hotel, with a beautiful neoclassical design and such a warm, personal atmosphere. The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming and little touches like thebreakfast basket make it feel unique. The best time to visit Athens is in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when the weather is warm but not too hot and perfect for walking around the city.

We’ve visited many times in summer and love the lively atmosphere, but it can get very hot, especially in July and August. It is a bit different when you are sailing!

If you want that balance of great weather, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed pace, spring and autumn are definitely the best times to go.
