Getting to Porto

By Air: Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO)
Located about 12 km from the city centre.

  • Metro (Line E – violet): The easiest and most affordable option. Around 30 minutes to the centre (Trindade).
  • Taxi / Uber / Bolt: Around 20–25 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Bus: Budget-friendly but slower than the metro.

Private Transfer: If you prefer a private transfer, I usually use this company. The ride to the city center takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

By Train
Arriving from Lisbon or elsewhere in Portugal? You’ll likely arrive at São Bento Station, right in the heart of the city. 🙂 I love train travel in Europe and usually book my tickets here. CP (Comboios de Portugal) runs high-speed trains (Alfa Pendular) and intercity trains to Porto Campanhã Station, with easy transfers to the city center.

By Bus
Buses are a budget-friendly option. Companies like FlixBus, Rede Expressos, and ALSA operate frequent routes from cities across Portugal and Spain. I have taken the FlixBus buses from Porto to various cities in Galicia (North of Spain) and they worked very well!!

Getting Around Porto

  • Metro do Porto: Clean, modern, and great for longer distances (including the airport and beaches like Matosinhos).
  • Buses (STCP): Cover areas not served by the metro.
  • Historic trams & funicular: Scenic and charming, especially around Ribeira.
  • Walking: Porto’s historic centre is compact, expect hills, but most highlights are within walking distance. I love walking and cycling!

The best time to visit Porto is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). My favorite month is September! During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions. Spring brings blooming flowers and vibrant outdoor events, while fall offers the beautiful harvest season, especially for wine lovers.

Summer (July and August) can be hot and crowded, especially with tourists, while winter (December to February) tends to be cooler and wetter, but can still be charming with fewer crowds and festive decorations.
