9 Iconic Heritage Hotels in Udaipur
Discover the most iconic heritage hotels in Udaipur, from lakeside palaces to historic havelis. Find the perfect place for a truly special stay in the indian City of Lakes!
I’m from Madrid, but India had been calling to us for a long time. My mother visited back in the 80s and always talked about how deeply she loved it: the colors, the energy, the people.
So when a trip to Egypt we had planned was suddenly cancelled, we took it as a sign. Instead, we put together an incredible three-week adventure through India in December, which turned out to be the perfect time to explore!
Out of all the places we visited, Udaipur stole our hearts completely. We loved how walkable the city was, how every corner seemed to open up to another lake view, and how the reflections of palaces shimmered across the water.

The people were warm and welcoming, we made real friendships, and we even brought home beautiful pieces we now use every day, little reminders of a place that made a big impression on us.
Udaipur was, without a doubt, our favorite stop on the trip to India, and it’s a city I would go back to in a heartbeat. In this guide, I’m sharing the most iconic heritage hotels where you can experience the magic of Udaipur for yourself.

What is a Heritage Hotel?
A heritage hotel is a historic property, often a former palace, haveli, mansion, or royal residence, that has been carefully restored and transformed into a place for guests to stay.
These hotels preserve the original architecture, craftsmanship, and cultural elements of the era they come from, offering an experience that blends history with modern comfort.
Staying in a heritage hotel allows travelers to immerse themselves in the region’s traditions, design, and stories, creating a unique and often luxurious alternative to standard accommodation in India.

Renting a Car in India to Travel Around Rajasthan
For our first trip to India, we decided to use private transfers, which felt like the most comfortable and stress-free option while getting used to the distances, roads, and rhythm of travel in Rajasthan.
However, renting a car is also a fantastic choice, specially if you love the freedom of exploring at your own pace. Having your own vehicle allows you to stop in small towns like Mandawa, visit lesser-known sites, and enjoy the landscapes between cities without being tied to a schedule.

Beautiful design. Nice hosts. Very good location.
We stayed at Little Garden Guest House during our stay in Udaipur and absolutely loved it. The location is perfect: we could walk everywhere and easily reach all the main sites, while the room was cozy, beautifully decorated, and full of authentic design touches.
Breakfast was delicious, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile. I especially loved how 3 generations live here together and how thoughtful and welcoming the owners were, sharing tips about the city. Unlike many other havelis, they have renovated the building without taking any of the historic charm away. I can recommend it and would stay here again!
