Miyajima Island, also known as “Shrine Island,” is one of Japan’s most iconic destinations and a perfect day trip from Hiroshima, offering a harmonious blend of history, spirituality, and Japanese beauty and architecture.
It’s home to the world-famous Itsukushima Shrine, with its magnificent red torii gate that seems to float on the water at high tide and it is one of the most photographed places in Japan.🇯🇵
The island itself was once considered so sacred that it was separated from the shrine so no one would spoil the sacred ground. This is why the entrance to the shrine, a huge red wooden gate, is also constructed offshore. How to get to Miyajima island, Hiroshima, Japan
Most visitors take the train from Hiroshima, followed by a short 10-minute ferry ride. This is exactly what we did, and it was quick and convenient. But on the second day, we noticed a special cruise departing from the Peace Memorial Park, offering a direct round trip to Miyajima for 4,000 yen (2024).
If you want a more scenic and unique journey, this cruise is absolutely worth considering! Pictures of this spot right below!
𑁍 If you finally take the train + ferry option read this: There’s a cute little bakery owned by a lovely Japanese woman 1 min walk from the mainland Ferry terminal if you want a little bite. It’s called Eiffel!

𑁍 Best Time of year to Visit Miyajima Island in Japan
The best time to visit Miyajima Island is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) seasons. In spring, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms, especially in early April, while the autumn season brings stunning views of vibrant red and yellow leaves, particularly in mid to late November.
Both seasons offer mild temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and sightseeing.
Avoid (if you can) visiting in summer (June to August), as the weather is hot and humid, and the island experiences heavy rainfall, especially in July. Winter (December to February) can be a good time for a quieter experience, but temperatures can be chilly, with occasional snowfall.
I have visited both in summer and spring and both were actually great!!!

Its tranquil setting is perfect for quiet reflection and offers stunning photo opportunities.

This museum is an unexpected treasure, showcasing traditional Japanese exhibits and featuring a picturesque Japanese garden. It’s a peaceful retreat that provides deeper insight into the island’s culture and history. We loved it!
