Is It Worth Spending the Night in the Agafay Desert?

Staying overnight in the Agafay Desert is definitely worth it. The experience of lying under a sky full of stars, far from city lights, is simply unforgettable. The peaceful silence of the desert at night creates a sense of calm and connection with nature that you can’t find anywhere else and I loved every moment of it!

If you ever get the chance, I truly believe everyone should try spending a night in the desert at least once!

Getting to and Around Marrakech and the Agafay Desert

How to get to Marrakech and the Agafay Desert in Morocco

To get to the Agafay Desert, you’ll start from Marrakech, which is the nearest city. The desert is only about a 30-minute drive away, making it a very easy one-night escape from the busy city of Marrakech to a peaceful, scenic desert setting. One of my favorite things to do there is watching the stars at night!

Getting to Marrakech:

Getting to Marrakech is easy, whether you're coming from within Europe or further abroad. The Marrakech Menara Airport is the main international airport, with direct flights from major cities like Paris, Madrid, London, and many others. We usually fly with Iberia Airlines from Madrid!

If you are coming from Asia, we offer our readers 5% off on all Qatar Airways flights! This is awesome! Plus you can't miss this blog post about where to stay 1 day in Doha, Qatar, If I fly other airlines, I use this cheap flight searcher to book!

Once you land, the city center is just a 15–20 minute drive away by taxi or airport transfer.

If you're already in Morocco, you can reach Marrakech by train, bus, or car from cities like Casablanca, Rabat, or Fes. Trains are reliable and comfortable, and Supratours or CTM buses are great options for budget-friendly travel.

Getting to the Agafay desert:

The easiest way to reach the Agafay Desert is from Marrakech, just 30 to 45 minutes away by car. I recommend booking your pickup directly with the accommodation you choose from this list. Alternatively, you can also arrange a private transfer, which I explain in more detail below.

Getting to Marrakech or the Agafay desert By Private Transfer:

If you are coming from other cities in Morocco, you can hire a Private Transfer. While more expensive than the bus or the train, it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience, as you can leave when is more convenient to you. This is what we do often when traveling in big groups or with family, although sometimes only 1 way.

We usually use this private transfers website to book, but in Morocco we can also recommend this trusted private transfer company that we used on our last trips and it always works well: Medtours. +212638774327 - medtoursmaroc.com.

Renting a Car in Morocco

Renting a car at Marrakech Airport is a great option if you want to explore Morocco on your own schedule or drive to the Agafay Desert. With a car, you can easily reach the Agafay Desert in about 45 minutes. Make sure to bring your passport, a valid driver’s license, and a credit card.

Ready to hit the road? Book your car rental in Tangier and start your adventure today! Use our codes for major discounts on various companies: For a 10% off in OK mobility use this code: CJOKRAC. In Centauro we have a 15% discount and this is automatic. Yay!

1. LA PAUSE ECOLODGE AGAFAY

Agafay Desert, Marrakesh, Morocco

From 400€/night, 1-4 pax

I stayed at La Pause Ecolodge in 2019 with my family, and it was the best experience we've had in the Agafay Desert — that’s why it’s first on my list. The lodge is set in a peaceful oasis just 30 km from Marrakech, super easy to get to, and what makes it unique is that there’s no electricity or Wi-Fi. Everything is lit by candles, and it creates the most calming and magical vibe. We stayed in a cozy mudhouse with a fireplace, and the food was absolutely delicious. The staff were so warm and welcoming too and I still think about the magical sunset and their delicious tangine! It is definitely one of the most Unique Places to stay in Morocco. Browse more photos from La Pause here

From 295€/night, 1-5 pax

Oxygen Lodge Agafay feels like a dream in the middle of the desert. The tents are super spacious and beautifully decorated, and the views? Just wow! You’ve got endless desert and even the snow-capped High Atlas mountains in the distance. It’s peaceful, stylish, and the whole atmosphere is very magical. 3. CARAVAN AGAFAY BY OUR HABITAS

Agafay Desert, Marrakesh, Morocco

We’ve mentioned Our Habitas hotels before — they just have a way of creating spaces that feel both grounded and elevated. Caravan Agafay is no exception. It’s the kind of place where a night in the desert in Morocco becomes something way more than just a stop on a trip. They have phenomenal food and drinks (some of the best in Morocco), free yoga sessions (love this!), and sunsets that turn into long, card-filled evenings under the stars. Can't ask for more! Check more photos here or check Our Habitas in Saudi Arabia or Our Habitas in Tulum.

Les Terrasses d’Agafay feels like a glamping dream! The fire show at dinner is a highlight, the activities like horse back riding are highly-rated and the view of the Agafay desert at sunrise and sunset is stunning. Glamping here strikes the perfect balance between wild nature and having all the hotel comforts. Check out more photos here.

𑁍 Frequently Asked Questions - Agafay Desert Camp Stays

Agafay vs Merzouga

Agafay Desert is just 40 minutes from Marrakech and offers scenic rocky landscapes and luxury desert glamping. You can check my favorite desert camps in this list above! Merzouga, in the Sahara, is a full-day trip (at least) with real sand dunes and camel treks. For a quick, stylish night in the desert Morocco, Agafay is ideal.

Marrakech to Agafay Desert

Agafay Desert is only 30–45 minutes from Marrakech, making it one of the top desert camps near Marrakech. Most Agafay desert camp stays offer transport, making it easy for a day trip or overnight glamping. I recommend staying one night!

Agafay Desert vs Sahara Desert

Agafay is easy to reach and perfect for desert glamping near Marrakech, while in the Sahara you will find remote dunes that are also very cool but it will take much longer to reach.. For convenience, I would recommend choosing an Agafay desert camp! However, in both you can spend a magical night in the desert in Morocco.

Luxury Desert Camp Morocco

Top luxury Agafay desert camps include La Pause, Oxygen Lodge, Caravan by Our Habitas, and Alkamar Camp. These desert camps near Marrakech offer beautiful views, glamping comfort, and unforgettable Morocco desert nights. Check them out in the list in the blog post above!

Agafay Desert Weather

Agafay Desert is sunny year-round. Spring and fall are ideal, summers are hot, and winter nights are cold. For your Agafay desert glamping stay I would recommend wearing layers: light clothing for the day, and a jacket or warm layer for the evening.

𑁍 Best eSIM Option in Marrakech and the Agafay Desert in Morocco

When we visit Morocco we use this eSIM, and it is a total game-changer! Plans start from just $5, making it one of the most affordable and convenient ways to stay connected. No need to hunt for a local SIM card or wait in long airport queues—activation was instant, and the connection was perfect! If you’re heading to Morocco, we highly recommend this eSIM.
