Planning a trip to the North of Spain? Discover the most beautiful 12 boutique hotels in scenic Asturias. A handpicked guide to my favorite charming and rural hotels.

I grew up in Madrid and my family is from Barcelona, but I can honestly say that the north of Spain is one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

It’s incredibly green, full of wild nature, and the food is absolutely spectacular. We have very close friends living in Gijón, so we visit Asturias often — and every time, I fall in love with it all over again!

These boutique hotels are some of my favorite places to stay when we’re up here. They’re all very authentic and Spanish, and many are close to green mountains and stunning beaches.

It’s the perfect area if you want a peaceful, scenic escape in Spain with incredible food— and ESPECIALLY ideal if you're looking to avoid the intense summer heat you get in Madrid and south of Spain. My favorite time to visit is summer and autumn.

Getting to and Around Asturias, Spain

✈️ Getting to Asturias is actually easier than you might think! You can fly directly into Asturias Airport, which has regular flights from Madrid, Barcelona, and several other European cities.

When I fly to Asturias from Madrid I usually fly with Iberia, Iberia Express, Vueling or Volotea. (Most of the times is Iberia or Iberia Express). From the airport, it’s about a 30–40 minute drive to Oviedo or Gijón, the region’s main cities.

🚂 If you’re already in Spain, the train is a beautiful and scenic optionRenfe trains run routes to Oviedo and Gijón from Madrid (around 4–5 hours) and other major cities. There are also long-distance buses that connect Asturias with much of the country.

🚗 And of course, if you’re up for a road trip, driving to Asturias is a dream. The roads are well-maintained, and the route from Madrid or the Basque Country winds through stunning mountain landscapes and lush green valleys.

For a 10% off in OK mobility car rental use this code: CJOKRAC. In Centauro we also offer our readers a 15% discount and this one is automatic, you don''t have to insert a code. If you prefer other companies, take a look at this site, powered by booking.com, to compare cheap car rentals.

⛴️ You can also get to Asturias by taking a ferry to Santander (Cantabria region) and then driving to Asturias. There are regular ferries from the UK (like Portsmouth or Plymouth) to Santander, which is in the neighboring region of Cantabria. Once you arrive, it's about a 2-hour scenic drive west along the northern coast of Spain to reach Asturias.

The road (A-8) runs through beautiful green countryside and coastal views — perfect if you’re bringing your own car or campervan and want to explore at your own pace. It’s a really relaxed and picturesque way to start your trip around Spain!

    From 300€/night, 1-4 pax

Solo Palacio, with a history spanning five centuries, offers a unique Wabi-Sabi experience. Wabi-Sabi offers a striking contrast to the sleek, mass-produced, and technology-saturated culture prevalent today. It encourages us to slow down, appreciate the transient nature of life, and find joy in the imperfect and impermanent. It invites us to embrace simplicity, cultivate mindfulness, and connect with the essence of things. Whether reveling in the warmth of a crackling fireplace, soaking in a freestanding bathtub, or gazing out at breathtaking views from the comfort of their apartment, guests at Solo Palacio are sure to find solace and inspiration in every moment of their stay. 3. PUEBLOASTUR ECO HOTEL & SPA

Cofiño, Asturias

I stayed at Puebloastur back in 2019 and honestly loved everything about it. It is situated overlooking the Picos de Europa Mountains. and only 20-minute drive both from the Asturian Coast and from Cangas de Onís. The view from the outdoor pool was probably my favorite part — you're surrounded by mountains, and it feels so peaceful. The food was also incredible and the Spa is amazing. Everything here is thoughtfully designed: high ceilings, chandeliers, a super comfy bed, and the atmosphere feels like something out of a classic novel. 𑁍 Best Time of the year to Stay at a Boutique Hotel in Asturias, Spain

The best time to visit Asturias is from May to September, when the weather is warn, green, and perfect for enjoying both the mountains and the sea.

Summer (especially July and August) is the warmest and sunniest, ideal for hiking in the Picos de Europa, beach days on the Costa Verde, or enjoying sidra (cider) on a terrace.

That said, June and September are lovely too — still warm, but with fewer tourists.

Asturias stays green year-round thanks to its rainy climate, so even spring and autumn can be charming if you don't mind a bit of drizzle. Just bring layers and enjoy the wild, natural beauty of this lesser-known gem in northern Spain.

𑁍 Best eSIM Option for Reliable Data in Spain

As we are Spanish and live in Spain most of the year, we don't need an eSim here, but when we travel we always use this eSIM because it’s the cheapest and easiest option.

No SIM swapping, no stress—just instant connection when we arrive at the new country. It works great! If you're heading to Spain, we highly recommend trying it! Check it out here :)
