We live part of the year in Mallorca, I grew up in Madrid and my family is from Barcelona, so the Balearic Islands have always felt like home in one way or another. But if I had to pick the most authentic and untouched island of them all, it would be Formentera.

There’s something truly magical about this island. It’s wild beaches, the transparent color of the water, and the untouched nature are, in my opinion, unlike anything else I have seen, and trust me, after visiting more than 40 countries, that’s saying a lot.

Getting to and Around Formentera

How to get to Formentera

To get to Formentera, you must take a ferry from Ibiza, as Formentera doesn’t have its own airport. I usually take the ferry with Balearia but all companies work well! Depending on the ferry type, the journey takes between 30 minutes (fast ferry) and 1 hour (standard ferry).

The most common way to get to Formentera is to fly into Ibiza Airport, then take a taxi (about 20 minutes) or bus (Line 10) to the ferry terminal in Ibiza Town. I usually fly to Ibiza with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia, they offer great deals and frequent flights from mainland Spain and major European cities.

Getting Around and Renting a car in Formentera

Once you arrive in La Savina, the port of Formentera, getting around is easy: you can rent a car, scooter, or bicycle, or use the island’s public bus system, which connects nearly all major beaches and villages.

🚗 Renting a car or a motorbike is the best way to explore Formentera and what we always do when we visit by land! So I highly recommend having a car, motorbike or bike to move around the island freely. It is a very small island so it is easy and fun to drive around!

I’ve put Can Micalet first because it’s the boutique hotel in Formentera that I’ve stayed at most when visiting by land. Located right in the port of La Savina, Can Micalet is a very cute boutique hotel with a charming pool, beautifully designed rooms, and genuinely kind staff. Just across the road you will finde the perfect sunset spot overlooking the bay.

You can walk to all the best restaurants in La Savina and from the port, which makes it ideal if you’re not renting a car, though I do recommend taking a taxi or bus to explore the island’s other beaches.

Best Time of the year to Visit the Best Boutique Hotels in Formentera

The best time to visit Formentera is during the late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is warm but not excessively hot, making it ideal for enjoying the island’s stunning beaches and outdoor activities. Additionally, the island is less crowded compared to the peak summer months.

  • May and June offer pleasant temperatures, blooming flowers, and clear skies, making it a great time for beachgoers and nature lovers.
  • September and October also provide warm weather and are perfect for enjoying the beaches, as well as hiking and exploring the island’s natural beauty. These months are my favorite! It barely rains and the sea is usually super calm. I love the end of the summer and autumn! There are also better hotel deals.
  • However, if you prefer the lively atmosphere and warm waters for swimming, July and August are the peak months for tourism in Formentera.
