Where to Stay in Madrid for First Time Visitors: Hotel Guide
Getting to and Around Madrid, Spain
How to get to Madrid, Spain
Madrid is easily accessible from around the world and the most common way to get to Madrid is to fly into Madrid's Airport. Qatar Airways connects Asia via Doha (DOH), with flights from cities like Bangkok and Tokyo.
We use Qatar Airways so much from Spain that our readers have a direct 5% discount with our link. Plus you can't miss this blog post about where to stay 1 day in Doha, Qatar!
From the U.S. and Latin America, Iberia offers direct routes from New York, Miami, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and more. In Europe, Iberia, Iberia Express, Volotea and Vueling provide frequent flights from London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, etc,. If I fly other airlines, I use this cheap flight searcher to book!
Upon arrival at Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), the city center is just 20-30 minutes away by metro, bus, or taxi.
Renting a Car in Madrid
In Madrid itself, you really don’t need a car, the city has excellent public transport, and most neighborhoods are walkable.
But if you plan to explore the beautiful regions around Madrid or want to check out some spots from my Weekend Trips from Madrid guide, having a car can be super handy.
If that’s the case, here are some helpful details on car rentals: Major rental companies like OK mobility (For a 10% off use this code: CJOKRAC) or Centauro (15% automatic discount) operate at Madrid-Barajas Airport and train stations.
Most destinations near Madrid have good roads, but some rural stays may require a 4x4 or a car with good clearance. If visiting historic towns like Toledo or Segovia, parking can be tricky—opt for public lots outside the old town.
If you prefer other companies, take a look at this site, powered by booking.com, to compare cheap car rentals.

Best Areas to Stay in Madrid for First Time Visitors
As someone who's lived in Madrid all my life, these are the areas I’d personally choose if I were visiting Madrid for the first time. Each one has a different vibe, but all are lovely, so it really depends on what kind of experience you’re after. Let's dig into where to stay in madrid for the first time:
Centro (Old Town) District:
Stay here if you want to be right in the middle of everything. This is Madrid’s historic heart, close to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, and all the main sights. It’s busy, lively, and super convenient if you want to walk everywhere.
Malasaña District
This one’s perfect if you like creative, alternative neighborhoods. Malasaña is full of cool little bars, vintage shops, and street art. It’s young, fun, and has a laid-back vibe that’s great if you’re into music, second-hand stores, and casual tapas spots.
Justicia District
Stay here if you love style and design. Justicia is trendy but a bit more grown-up than Malasaña — think chic design cafés, good restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, and beautifully renovated buildings. It’s central but calmer, and I always recommend it to friends who like the artsy-meets-elegant mix. My boyfriend lives here and it is my favorite neighborhood in Madrid!
Salamanca District
If you’re looking for something a bit more refined, Salamanca is your place. This is Madrid’s upscale area, home to designer stores, great high-end restaurants, and wide, elegant streets. It’s quiet, safe, and ideal if you prefer a more polished, residential feel.

Other Things to Know about Visiting Madrid, Spain
𑁍 Top Local Things to Do in Madrid, Spain:
As someone born and raised in Madrid, I’ve spent years showing my friends around the city. If it’s your first time here, these are the spots I always make sure they don’t miss. Trust me, you have to do all of these to really feel the magic of Madrid!
Explore the Prado Museum — Dive into Spain’s richest art collection with masterpieces by Velázquez and Goya.
Visit the Royal Palace — Wander through stunning rooms and beautiful gardens in Europe’s largest royal palace.
Stroll Retiro Park — Perfect spot to relax, rent a boat (there's a little lake and it is so much fun), or just soak up the local vibe. You could even take a yoga class.
Go to a Flamenco Show — Experience authentic Spanish passion and dance in a cozy tablao. If you have the time, visit the South of Spain for an even better experience.
Walk around Plaza Mayor — This historic square is buzzing with street performers and great cafes.
Discover the Reina Sofía Museum — See Picasso’s Guernica and modern art that will blow your mind.
Join a Tapas Tour — Taste the best small plates while learning about Madrid’s food culture. I can't remember how many times I have done this tapas tour when international friends visit and they always love it!
Bike or Segway Tour of the City — A fun way to cover more ground and see hidden spots. I love biking so I highly recommend this vintage biking tour of Madrid.
Visit the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium — Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the stadium tour is impressive. I live in the same district. as the stadium and it is so much fun when there are games! Spanish people really live up to it. If you prefer a more personalized experience when visiting and you a soccer lover, this is a great private guided tour of the Bernabeu Stadium.
Explore the Mercado de San Miguel — A food market heaven where you can nibble on fresh tapas and drinks. It can be a bit touristy but it is worth the visit. Mercado San Antón, Mercado Antón Martín and Mercado de Vallehermoso offer a more local market experience if you prefer this!

𑁍 Best Time of year to Visit Madrid, Spain
The best time to visit Madrid is spring (April to June) and autumn (September to early November). June, September and October are my favorite months to visit Madrid!
As I grew up in Madrid and I live here most part of the year, so I have experienced all seasons. I will detail each season below, and any month is good for traveling, but in my opinion, in August it is too hot here (although everyone is gone so you have the city nearly for yourself) and in December Madrid is too crowded! So for me, any other months apart from those would be a better option.
Spring (April-June): The parks are all green, flowers are blooming, and temperatures range between 15-25°C (59-77°F). It's perfect for exploring Madrid, the surrounding charming towns, unique hotels, and scenic landscapes. April can be rainy.
Autumn (September-November): The heat of summer fades, making it ideal for weekend trips from Madrid. Vineyards in Ribera del Duero and La Mancha are in harvest season, and the golden hues of Extremadura’s dehesa and Sierra de Gredos create stunning scenery.
Winter (December-February): While Madrid can be chilly, with temperatures around 5-12°C (41-54°F), it’s a great time for cozy stays in historic paradores, spa hotels, and countryside retreats. It is usually sunny, so I like winter too!
Summer (July-August): It gets very hot, often exceeding 35°C (95°F), but it’s still a great time for poolside city stays or visiting higher-altitude destinations like Segovia. Many locals escape Madrid during this time, making weekends feel quieter in the city.

𑁍 Best eSIM Option for Reliable Data in Spain
As I am Spanish and live in Spain most of the year, I don't need an eSim here, but when we travel we always use this eSIM because it’s the cheapest and easiest option.
No SIM swapping, no stress—just instant connection when we arrive at the new country. It works great! If you're heading to Spain, we highly recommend trying it! Check it out here :)
