How to get to Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain

There are several ways to get to Costa Brava, Spain, depending on your starting point. Here are some options:

1. By Air (via Barcelona or Girona Airports)

  • Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN): The most common international gateway to Costa Brava. It’s located about 1.5 to 2 hours south of the region by car or bus. From Barcelona, you can rent a car, take a train, or use a bus to reach towns like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, and Begur.
  • Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO): A closer option, located about 30 minutes from popular Costa Brava destinations like Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar. This airport mainly serves low-cost airlines and is ideal for travelers flying from European cities.

We usually take the AVE high-speed train or a flight from Madrid and then rent a car. We recommend flying around Spain or from Europe with  Iberia, Iberia Express and Vueling!

2. By Train

From Barcelona, take a train from Barcelona Sants or Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia stations to various Costa Brava destinations. The journey typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the destination. There are direct trains to towns like Figueres, Platja d’Aro, and Blanes.

3. By Car: What I recommend the most for your Costa Brava trip!

Renting a car is one of the most flexible ways to explore Costa Brava, allowing you to visit multiple towns and beaches. From Barcelona, take the C-32 highway or AP-7 to head north. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

4. By Bus

Regular buses connect Barcelona and Girona with Costa Brava. You can catch a bus from Barcelona Nord Bus Station or Barcelona Sants to popular towns like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, or Palafrugell. The journey can take 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the destination. I usually purchase my bus tickets here.

5. By Taxi or Private Transfer

A taxi or private transfer is a convenient but more expensive option, especially if traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. You can arrange this from Barcelona or Girona airports to your Costa Brava destination.

June and September are definitely my favorite months for a trip around Costa Brava! August is also fun because there are so many things going on in all villages, summer markets, festivals, night shows, beach concerts, etc. However, it is when all Spaniards are on vacation so expect crowds.
