I’m from Madrid, and since we have cousins living in Lisbon, we visit often—and absolutely love it. It’s just a quick one-hour flight from Madrid, and in the coming years, it will be even easier to get there with the opening of the high-speed train from Madrid (we used to have an overnight train, which was sadly canceled many years ago, but the new plans are exciting!). I really love trains!
So, whether you’re here for a short getaway or a deeper dive, this complete 4-day Lisbon itinerary for first-timers will help you make the most of your time. From charming historic neighbourhoods to modern viewpoints and mouthwatering local food, I’ve included all my favorite spots and tips to help you fall in love with Lisbon too.

How to Get to Lisbon in Portugal
Lisbon is one of the easiest cities to reach in Portugal, whether you're coming from within Europe, like me (I live in Madrid!) or overseas.
✈️ By Plane
Lisbon Portela Airport is the main international gateway and is well connected with direct flights from major cities across Europe, North America, and beyond. From the airport, it's just a 15-20 minute taxi, Uber, or metro ride to the city center.
🚄 By Train
If you’re traveling from other Portuguese cities like Porto or Coimbra, trains operated by Comboios de Portugal are efficient and comfortable. The main station in Lisbon is Santa Apolónia or Oriente, depending on your route.
🚌 By Bus
Long-distance buses from companies like Rede Expressos or FlixBus connect Lisbon with other cities in Portugal and Europe. Buses usually arrive at Sete Rios or Oriente terminals. I have used FlixBus many times in Portugal, specially between Porto and cities in the North of Spain, in the Galicia region.
🚗 By Car
Driving to Lisbon is also a great option, especially if you’re planning a road trip across Portugal or Spain. Major highways (like the A1 from Porto or A2 from the Algarve) lead directly into the city, and Lisbon has many parking garages if you're staying in central areas. Just keep in mind that many Portuguese highways use electronic tolls, so check your rental car options, as I was fined once because I didn't know!!! I received my fine about 2 years later in my home in Madrid.
How to Get from Lisbon Airport to the City Center
Lisbon Airport is very close to the city — only about 7 km (4.3 miles) from downtown. You have several easy options to reach the center:
🚇 Metro (Best Budget Option)
The red metro line connects the airport directly to the city.
Transfer to the green or blue line depending on where you're staying (e.g., Baixa-Chiado or Rossio).
It takes about 25–30 minutes and costs around €1.65 + €0.50 for the reusable Viva Viagem card.
🚕 Taxi or Uber (Most Convenient)
A taxi to the center costs around €15–€20 (make sure the meter is on).
Uber or Bolt may be slightly cheaper and often more reliable. I usually use Uber.
Travel time: around 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic.
🚌 Aerobus
The Aerobus runs every 20–30 minutes and stops at major central locations (e.g., Avenida da Liberdade, Rossio, Cais do Sodré). Ticket: €4.50 one-way, available online or on board.
🚗 Private Transfer
For a more direct and private option, you can hire a Private Transfer from Lisbon Airport. While more expensive than the bus or the train, it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience, as you can leave when is more convenient to you and it is ideal if you're arriving late or want door-to-door service with luggage. Renting a Car in Lisbon Portugal
You don’t need a car to explore Lisbon — the city is compact, walkable, and well-connected by public transport, including trams, buses, and the metro. In fact, driving in the city center can be stressful due to narrow streets and limited parking.
However, if you’re planning a road trip around Portugal, renting a car is a fantastic idea. It gives you the freedom to explore charming towns in the Douro Valley, Nazaré, or even the Algarve at your own pace. Portugal’s highways are in great condition, and the scenic routes make the journey part of the adventure!

Parking at the airport in Lisbon
Parking at Lisbon Airport is convenient, with several options to suit different needs. The airport offers both short-term and long-term parking facilities.
P1 (Premium Parking): Located closest to the terminal, ideal for short stays or quick pick-ups and drop-offs.
P2 (Classic Parking): Offers a balance between proximity and cost, suitable for short and medium-term parking.
P3 (Low-Cost Parking): Located further from the terminal but offers the most affordable rates, ideal for long-term parking.
All parking areas are secure and monitored 24/7. To ensure availability and potentially secure a better rate, it's advisable to book your parking spot online in advance through the Lisbon Airport's official website. Shuttle services are available for the more distant lots.

Lunch in Saldanha: Have lunch in the Saldanha area, where you can find a variety of dining options, from traditional Portuguese cuisine to international dishes.
Evening:
Avenida da Liberdade: Stroll along Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s main boulevard, lined with high-end shops and cafes. This is a great spot for some leisurely shopping.
Rooftop Bar: End your day with dinner at a rooftop bar, such as Park Bar or Topo, offering stunning city views and a relaxed atmosphere.

Quinta da Regaleira: Explore Quinta da Regaleira, a mystical estate with lush gardens, grottoes, and a fascinating palace. Don’t miss the Initiation Well, a spiraling underground tower.
Afternoon:
Cascais or Estoril: Head to the coastal towns of Cascais or Estoril. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach, explore the charming streets of Cascais, or visit the Casino in Estoril.
