Kyoto is one of those places that just captures your heart. I’m from Madrid,, but because one of my best friends is half Japanese, I’ve been coming to Japan since college, and no matter how many times I return, Kyoto always feels extra special.

Now that Iberia has restarted direct flights from Madrid to Tokyo, it’s easier than ever to come back, and I find myself tempted all the time.

What I love most about Japan is how effortless it feels to be here: the incredible politeness, how everything is spotless, and how people are always willing to help without rushing you or expecting anything in return.

After traveling through more than 40 countries, I can honestly say nowhere else gives me the same peace of mind as Japan.

This guide is all about the most UNIQUE ryokans in Gion, Kyoto, the historic district that still feels like stepping back in time.

Gion is full of teahouses, lantern-lit streets, and glimpses of geishas, so staying in a traditional ryokan here is one of the most authentic experiences you can have in Japan.

Unlike Osaka, which lost many historic homes during WWII, Kyoto has preserved its old charm, and that makes its ryokans feel even more special. You will find some in my list that date back to the 1800’s.

How to get to Kyoto, Japan

✈️ By Plane

Kyoto doesn’t have its own airport, so the closest one is Osaka’s Kansai International Airport (KIX). From there, you can take the direct airport train (Haruka Express) to Kyoto in about 75 minutes.

From Europe, I usually fly Iberia direct to Tokyo, but you can also find routes with other airlines. If I don’t fly Iberia, I use this cheap flight searcher to find the cheapest tickets.

Train

This is my favorite way to arrive in Kyoto. The Shinkansen (bullet train) connects Kyoto with Tokyo in just over 2 hours and with Osaka in only 15 minutes. The trains are fast, comfortable, and super reliable.

I always recommend booking a Japan Rail Pass if you plan to travel to several cities, it makes life so much easier. I usually buy it my tickets here in advance!

Renting a Car in Kyoto

Renting a car in Japan is great if you’re planning to explore the countryside, but for Kyoto itself you really don’t need one. The city’s public transport is fantastic, and driving/parking in central Kyoto can be tricky.

If you’re planning day trips outside the city, renting a car can be a great idea. It’s especially handy if you want to stay in ryokans in Gion Kyoto, the countryside in Nara prefecture, or even a longer drive along the coast.

  • Just remember: in Japan they drive on the left, and you’ll need an International Driving Permit to rent a car as a foreigner.

Breakfast is a real highlight here, homemade and beautifully prepared, some of the best food I had in Japan.

What makes this place truly special though, as it usually happens when staying at ryokans in Gion Kyoto, are the owners, so thoughtful, always adding little gestures that make you feel cared for. If you’re looking for a traditional ryokan experience that’s peaceful, homely, and perfectly located, Yadoya Manjiro is one of those unforgettable places to stay in Kyoto.
