✈️ By Plane: The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is Porto’s international airport, located about 11 km from the city center. It has direct flights from many European cities and a few long-haul destinations. I usually fly there from Spain with Iberia, Iberia Express and Vueling!
🚆 By Train: If you’re coming from cities like Lisbon, Coimbra, or Braga, taking a train is a scenic and comfortable option. CP (Comboios de Portugal) runs high-speed trains (Alfa Pendular) and intercity trains to Porto Campanhã Station, with easy transfers to the city center.
🚌 By Bus: Buses are a budget-friendly option. Companies like FlixBus, Rede Expressos, and ALSA operate frequent routes from cities across Portugal and Spain. I have taken the FlixBus buses from Porto to various cities in Galicia (North of Spain) and they work very well!!
🚗 By Car: Porto is well connected via highways. From Lisbon, it’s about a 3-hour drive on the A1. Just keep in mind that many Portuguese highways use electronic tolls, so check your rental car options, as I was fined once because I didn't know!!! I received my fine about 2 years later in my home in Madrid.
How to Get from Porto Airport to Porto city center
Porto Airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport) is located about 11 kilometers (approximately 7 miles) northwest of the city center, making it easily accessible for travelers.
The most convenient way to get to Porto is by taking the Metro. The purple line (Line E) connects the airport to the city center in about 30 minutes, with trains running every 30 minutes.
Alternatively, you can opt for a taxi or rideshare service, which takes around 20 minutes depending on traffic. For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, several bus services also operate between the airport and various points in the city, with travel times of around 40 minutes.
Renting a Car in Porto, Portugal
You don’t need a car to explore Porto — the city is compact, walkable, and well-connected by public transport, including trams, buses, and the metro. In fact, driving in the city center can be stressful due to narrow streets and limited parking.
However, if you’re planning a road trip around Portugal, renting a car is a fantastic idea. It gives you the freedom to explore charming towns like Guimarães, Douro Valley, Nazaré, or even the Algarve at your own pace. Portugal’s highways are in great condition, and the scenic routes make the journey part of the adventure.

Morning - History, Bookstores & City Views
Begin your day with a visit to the Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, known for its intricate wooden staircase and neo-Gothic design. Arrive early to beat the crowds, and if you're a Harry Potter fan, you’ll love the connection between the bookstore and J.K. Rowling's time in Porto.
Next, head to the Clérigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos), just a short walk away. Climb the 240 steps to the top for panoramic views of the city and the Douro River. Afterward, take a stroll through the nearby Cordoaria Garden for a peaceful break.
Late Morning: Make your way to the São Bento Railway Station to admire its breathtaking tile panels depicting scenes from Portugal's history. The station is a functioning transport hub, but its intricate blue-and-white azulejos make it feel more like a museum.

After lunch, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, the heart of the port wine industry. Visit one of the famous wine cellars like Calem, Graham’s or Sandeman for a port wine tasting session and a guided tour to learn about the history and process of port wine production.

Evening - Sunset Cruise & Dinner in Style
Wrap up your day by taking a scenic Douro River cruise. These short boat rides offer a stunning view of Porto's six bridges and a unique perspective of the city from the water. We took this super highly rated sunset sailboat cruise and we loved it!

Day 1:
Start your day with breakfast at a local café, then head to the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge for stunning views of the Douro River. Cross the bridge to visit the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, a beautiful park with panoramic views. Next, explore the historic Ribeira district, where colorful buildings line the waterfront.
Don't miss the São Francisco Church, famous for its baroque interior, and the Palácio da Bolsa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For lunch, indulge in traditional Portuguese cuisine at Taberna Santo António or enjoy some tapas at Bota & Bira.

The best time to visit Porto is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). My favorite month is September! During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions.
Spring brings blooming flowers and vibrant outdoor events, while fall offers the beautiful harvest season, especially for wine lovers.
Summer (July and August) can be hot and crowded, especially with tourists, while winter (December to February) tends to be cooler and wetter, but can still be charming with fewer crowds and festive decorations.
