We sail every summer across the Mediterranean because my boyfriend is a yatch captain, and though we’ve explored countless islands, the Aeolian Islands hold a truly special place in our hearts. We spent sailing around the islands around 2 weeks before continuing our trip to Catania.

Living in Mallorca (although originally from Madrid), we’re surrounded by beauty every day, yet the Aeolians feel different: raw, volcanic, and very authentic.

Waking up on the boat with nothing but the sound of the sea and the outline of volcanic islands in the distance was probably my favorite part.

Every morning felt different, one day anchored near Salina surrounded by green hills, the next drifting past the dramatic, smoky silhouette of Stromboli, especially magical at night when you can actually see the volcano quietly erupting under the stars.

And then there are those moments you don’t plan, like arriving to Vulcano and smelling the sulfur in the air before you even see the island, or hiking up for panoramic views that make you realize how wild and untouched this part of Italy still feels.

In this guide, I have curated my favorite and best hotels in the Aeolian Islands where you can experience this wild elegance and the Mediterranean soul of these islands.

Reopening May 2026. Bookings open. Capofaro is one of those places you almost want to keep to yourself. Set right in the middle of vineyards on Salina with insane views of the sea and Stromboli in the distance. The rooms are very beautiful, all whitewashed with little terraces, and everything feels super calm and connected to nature.

The food is also such a highlight, very local and fresh with their own wines, and overall it just feels really special! One of my favorites and easily one of the best hotels in the Aeolian Islands.

Principe Di Salina Boutique Hotel is one of those small, family-run places that just gets everything right! Super peaceful, with beautiful views, spotless rooms with private terraces, and the kind of comfort where you actually sleep amazingly well.

The pool area is perfect for relaxing, breakfast is generous with lots of homemade touches, and dinner is honestly so good you’ll probably end up staying in most nights. It just feels very authentic and definitely one of the best hotels in the Aeolian Islands and probably my favorite! The perfect escape if you are visiting Sicily 🙂

Quartara Boutique Hotel is such a special little spot in Panarea, super well located near the port but still peaceful, with beautiful views all over the island. The rooms are thoughtfully done, breakfast is fresh and delicious, and there are lovely outdoor spaces (including a panoramic jacuzzi) to just sit and take it all in.

But what really makes it stand out is the people. I love family-owned hotels and here they take care of every little detail, making it easily one of the best hotels in the Aeolian Islands.

Hotel Signum is one of those places that just has the best energy. Set above the bay in Malfa with beautiful gardens, sea views, and a super peaceful atmosphere. The rooms are elegant, there is a Michelin-starred restaurant! and everything feels really thoughtful without being over the top. The staff is very nice and it feels more like staying with friends, which is why it’s easily one of the best hotels in the Aeolian Islands.

Best Time to Visit the Aeolian Islands

The best time to visit the Aeolian Islands is from May to June and September to early October, when the weather is warm, the sea is perfect for swimming, and the islands feel more relaxed without the peak crowds.

That said, my personal favorite time is summer, especially July and August, when places like Panarea and Lipari come alive with energy, beach days, and long dinners by the sea.

It’s definitely busier and more expensive, but the atmosphere is unbeatable if you’re looking for that vibrant island vibe.

Traveling around Italy is always an unforgettable experience, and after exploring the beautiful Aeolian Islands, it’s easy to see just how diverse the country really is. From island hopping and sailing between volcanic landscapes to enjoying slow dinners by the sea, this part of Italy feels truly special.
