I am from Madrid, Spain, but we traveled to South Africa for a friend’s birthday and spent here nearly a month in the month of february. We visited the Western Cape from Cape Town, driving out to explore some of the region’s incredible game lodges.

We stayed three days in the first lodge on my list, and it was an unforgettable experience, the wildlife, the views, and the luxury of the lodge made it feel truly special.

I’d recommend it to anyone wanting a safari experience near Cape Town, especially if you don’t have the time to make it all the way to Kruger.

I had to do a lot of research before deciding which game reserve to visit, so in this post, I’m sharing the best game lodges in Western Cape, each offering a unique way to enjoy South Africa’s wildlife and where you will be cared for and will have an amazing vacation.

Getting to and Around the Game Lodges in Western Cape

The easiest way to visit the game lodges in Western Cape is to fly into Cape Town International Airport. We usually buy our cheap flight tickets here. We paid 650€ each for our trip Madrid-Cape Town with Qatar Airways. All of our readers have a direct 5% off their tickets with Qatar Airways.

From there, simply rent a car and drive to your lodge, most reserves are between 2.5 to 5 hours away. The roads are well maintained, the scenery is beautiful (really this was one of the most beautiful road trips I have ever done), and having your own car gives you flexibility to explore along the way or combine your safari with time in Cape Town or along the Garden Route. Plus, we felt very safe.

Beautiful Stops We made Along the Way

Schoone Oordt Country House is such a special stop along the way to our game lodge in Western Cape. We stayed here for one night during our road trip, and it was absolutely beautiful. So elegant, incredibly warm and personal. We even got to meet the owners and you can truly see that everything is done with so much care and love. It’s the perfect charming pause on your way to your game lodge. Highly recommended.

  • Stanford Valley Country Lodge is such a lovely stop if you’re driving through the Overberg. We stopped here for lunch and it was absolutely wonderful, the setting is peaceful and scenic, and the food was genuinely delicious. You can also stay overnight in one of their cottages, which would make for a perfect countryside escape.

  • I also highly recommend visiting Agulhas National Park: the landscapes feel wild and untouched, and standing at the southernmost tip of Africa is pretty special. It’s peaceful, scenic, and such a beautiful contrast to the safari experience.
  • And I also really recommend stopping at Betty’s Bay: we saw so many beautiful penguins right on the beach, completely for free and without crowds. It felt wild and untouched, and watching them up close in their natural habitat was such a special experience. Here’s the exact point.

Gondwana Game Reserve is one of those game lodges in Western Cape that makes you fall in love with South Africa all over again. This luxury private Big Five reserve offers vast, open landscapes where animals roam completely free, and the setting feels wild yet beautifully cared for.

We drove there from Cape Town, which already made the experience feel like an adventure, such a fun road trip with changing scenery along the way. We stopped 1 night on our way there, and 1 night on our way back, visiting several villages along the way.

Arriving at the reserve, you immediately feel how big it is. It’s not a small, enclosed park, it’s expansive, peaceful, and truly immersive. Knowing the animals roam freely makes every game drive feel authentic and exciting.

The reserve offers several accommodation types, from elegant safari lodge rooms to private villas and even family lodges that can host up to 8 people, perfect if you’re traveling as a group. We stayed for 3 days and 2 nights in a small tented eco camp (which unfortunately no longer exists), but it was such a special experience being that close to nature.

That said, all the villas and lodges we saw around the property were stunning, beautifully maintained, and thoughtfully designed to blend into the landscape. No matter where you stay, the attention to detail is clear.

Each stay includes two game drives, which honestly is one of the highlights. Heading out early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, watching the light change over the bush while spotting wildlife, is something I’ll never forget.

The food was also excellent: generous, flavorful, and exactly what you want after a long day out in the reserve. And the staff truly made the experience even better. Everyone was so warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind to us throughout our stay.

Best Time to Visit Cape Town and the Western Cape

The best time to visit Cape Town and the Western Cape really depends on what you’re looking for. Summer (November to March) is my personal favorite, long sunny days, perfect beach weather, and incredible sunsets, though it can be busier. We visited during the month of February and it was incredible!

Autumn (April to May) is beautiful too, with fewer crowds and still lovely temperatures. Winter (June to August) brings cooler weather and some rain, but it’s actually great for safari, as the landscapes turn green and wildlife can be easier to spot.

Spring (September to October) is stunning for wildflowers and fresh energy. Honestly, there’s no bad time, each season has its own charm.

Traveling around Africa and Final Thoughts

Traveling around Africa is something that truly stays with you, the landscapes are dramatic, the cultures are rich, and no two places feel the same. From vibrant cities to remote nature escapes, it’s a continent that constantly surprises you!
