I’m from Madrid, but every summer I sail across the Mediterranean with my boyfriend, who’s a yacht captain in the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean sea. We spend weeks hopping from cala to cala, and we love it!
What I love most about Menorca is how it’s still a bit of a secret — it’s less well-known than Mallorca, so there’s a lot less tourism. That means fewer crowds, and more room to soak in the natural beauty.
In this guide, I’ll share the spots we always return to — from the breathtaking Cala Turqueta and Cala Mitjana, to the postcard-perfect Cala Galdana, plus a few lesser-known little beaches along the coast. Whether you're planning your first trip to Spain or coming back for more, this island has a way of stealing your heart!

✈️ The easiest way to reach Menorca is by plane. Menorca’s main airport, Menorca Airport, is well-connected to various European cities, especially during the summer months. I usually fly with Iberia Express, Vueling, and Iberia — they offer great deals and frequent flights from mainland Spain and major European cities.
⛴️ If you prefer a more scenic route, you can also reach Menorca by ferry from Barcelona or Valencia. The journey takes about 6–8 hours, so it’s a longer ride, but it's a unique experience, especially if you're traveling with your own car. The Balearia ferry service is fantastic, and I’ve used it many times for a relaxing, comfortable trip across the Mediterranean.

Best Beaches in the South Coast of Menorca:
The south coast of Menorca is what beach dreams are made of — think powdery white sand, calm turquoise waters, and pine trees leaning over hidden coves. It’s no wonder we always find ourselves coming back here summer after summer when we sail around the island. Some spots are a bit more famous (and busier), but honestly, they’re famous for a reason — they're absolutely breathtaking.
Macarella and Macarelleta
If you’ve ever seen a postcard from Menorca, there’s a good chance it was taken at Macarella or Macarelleta. These two coves are pure paradise: soft, white sand and that unreal blue water that makes you feel like you're somewhere in the Caribbean.
Since car access is restricted during the high season (to help protect the area), we usually either anchor the boat nearby or recommend catching the shuttle bus from Ciutadella if you're coming by land. It’s super easy and definitely worth it!
I still remember the first time I walked down to Macarelleta — the smaller, more hidden sister of Macarella. The view from the cliffside trail literally took my breath away. We spent the whole afternoon just swimming, sunbathing, and watching the boats gently sway in the bay. It’s one of those places you never forget.
Cala Mitjana and Mitjaneta
Another absolute gem on the south coast is Cala Mitjana, with its tiny neighbor Mitjaneta just around the corner. Every time we visit, I’m amazed at how natural and untouched this spot feels, even though it’s pretty easy to get to.
You can either park nearby and take a short walk through the pine forest, or if you're feeling adventurous (like we usually are!), hike along the scenic coastal trail. Either way, the reward is pure magic: crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, and plenty of space to snorkel or simply float and forget the world for a while.
One summer evening, we swam over to Mitjaneta just before sunset, and we had the whole little cove to ourselves — just us, the sound of the waves, and the golden light. Truly unforgettable!

Son Bou Beach
Son Bou is the biggest beach in Menorca, and it’s one of my personal favorites too. There’s plenty of space to spread out, even in high season. You’ll find beautiful golden sand, water sports, and even some ancient ruins hidden behind the dunes if you feel like a little adventure. Plus, the restaurants nearby are perfect for a relaxed lunch by the sea.
Binigaus Beach and Santo Tomás
If you love nature, Binigaus Beach is a dream. It's an easy walk or bike ride from the town of Santo Tomás, and it feels wild and free. The beach stretches forever, and it's less crowded than other spots — perfect for a quiet afternoon of sunbathing, swimming, or just soaking in the beauty of Menorca’s coastline.
Best Beaches in the North Coast of Menorca:
While most travelers rush to the south of Menorca for its famous turquoise coves, let me tell you — the north coast hides some of the island’s wildest and most unforgettable beaches.
Every summer when we sail around Menorca, we make a point to spend a few days exploring this side of the island. It's rougher, more untouched, and feels like a true adventure. Here are a few of my favorite spots you absolutely shouldn’t miss:
Cala Pregonda
Cala Pregonda feels like a different world. It's tucked away in the north, far from any crowds or beach bars. To get there, you’ll need to hike about 30 minutes from Binimel·là Beach. I won't lie — it gets hot because there's almost no shade along the way! But honestly, the hike is part of the experience: you walk through reddish sand dunes, rocky landscapes, and every step builds your excitement.
Every time we anchor nearby with the boat, I love swimming to shore and watching the golden-red sand sparkle under the sun. Cala Pregonda’s clear, calm water is perfect for snorkeling too — you’ll often spot colorful fish right near the rocks!
Cala Tortuga
If you’re dreaming of a quiet escape, Cala Tortuga is a hidden treasure. We sometimes dock a little further out and paddle in with the dinghy, but you can also reach it on foot — there’s a beautiful hiking trail, and in high season, a shuttle bus from Mahón makes it super easy.
The best part? On the way to Cala Tortuga, you’ll pass the stunning Cala Presili and the charming Laguna de Morella. We usually stop for a quick swim at Cala Presili — its shallow, crystal-clear water is so inviting — before heading onward. Cala Tortuga itself is peaceful, with a wild, untouched feeling that I just love. It’s perfect if you want a real "lost in paradise" vibe.
Cala Pilar
Cala Pilar is another favorite on the north coast — it’s like stepping into a painting. The sand here is more golden-red compared to the south, and the water is unbelievably clear.
The first time I visited Cala Pilar, I couldn't believe how pure and quiet it felt. We swam for hours and had the whole beach almost to ourselves. It’s a little tricky to get to — there's a short hike involved — but honestly, that’s what keeps it so special. If you love finding secret spots far from the crowds, you’ll fall in love with it just like we did.
Beach Tips for Your Adventure in Menorca:
Parking: Secure a parking spot early, especially at popular beaches like Turqueta and Son Saura. Keep an eye on illuminated panels for real-time occupancy information.
Avoiding Jellyfish: This isn't so fun, right? But it's inevitable. The warm waters of the Mediterranean attract these annoying creatures, and if we're not careful, they can ruin our vacation. Pay attention to wind direction and jellyfish warnings to enjoy a hassle-free day at the beach. Generally, if the wind blows from the south, head north, and if it blows from the north, you ought to go to the southern beaches.

One of the things I love most about Menorca is how magical it feels when you explore it by boat. Many of Menorca’s most beautiful calas — like Cala Macarelleta, Cala Escorxada, or Cala Trebalúger — are much easier to reach by sea than by land.
Sailing in Menorca gives you the freedom to anchor in tiny, untouched coves where you might have the whole beach to yourself for hours. It’s pure Mediterranean magic!
The coastline here is breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs, pine forests, and endless shades of turquoise water. Whether you're renting a small motorboat for the day or hopping aboard a sailboat for a week, being out on the water in Menorca is an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend!

Best Time to Visit Menorca, Spain
The best time to visit Menorca is from late May to the end of October. During this period, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. Here's a breakdown:
Late May to June: The weather is pleasantly warm, and the island is less crowded. It's an excellent time for exploring the natural beauty, hiking, and enjoying the beaches without the peak-season crowds.
July to August: This is the peak tourist season with the hottest weather, perfect for beach days and water activities. However, it’s also the busiest time, with more tourists and higher prices.
September to mid October: The weather is still warm, but the crowds start to thin out. This period offers a great balance of pleasant temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere.
If you prefer fewer tourists and more affordable accommodations, late May to June or September to early October are ideal times to visit. My personal favorite months in the Balearic islands are June and September!
