My mother’s family is from Barcelona, so we spent our summers in a little coastal town in the Costa Brava called Blanes. Being so close to the South of France made it very easy for us to visit for some days every summer! Visiting different towns every time and road tripping along the most beautiful scenery was our favorite summer plan.

Getting to and Around the South of France
How to get to the South of France?
For this 7-day itinerary, the easiest and most convenient way is to arrive in Nice and depart from Marseille (or vice versa if you decide to reverse the route).
- Flying to Nice: Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the second busiest airport in France after Paris and offers excellent international and domestic connections.
- Flying out of Marseille: Marseille Provence Airport is the ideal departure point after your visit to Avignon and Marseille.
I usually travel to the South of France by car or train, but if I fly, I always fly with Iberia, Iberia Express, or Vueling, for direct and affordable options from Spain. - By Train: If you’re coming from Paris, you can take a high-speed TGV train directly to Nice (around 6 hours) or to Marseille (3.5 hours). The TGV also connects with cities like Lyon, Avignon, and Aix-en-Provence.
Tip: If you find cheaper round-trip flights in and out of the same city, you can still use the train or rental car to loop back to your starting point.

Day-by-Day: Detailed South of France Itinerary in 7 days
Day 1: Arrival in Nice
Begin your South of France itinerary in Nice, the quintessential gateway to the French Riviera. Upon arrival, take time to explore the Promenade des Anglais, a long stretch of beachfront walkway that offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
A stroll through the Old Town, or Vieux Nice, will reveal a maze of narrow streets lined with colorful buildings, local shops, and vibrant markets.
In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the artistic spirit of the city by visiting the Marc Chagall National Museum. End your day with a leisurely dinner at one of Nice’s many seaside restaurants, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies as the sun sets over the water.

𑁍 Local Tip: For a truly local experience in Nice, visit Cours Saleya Market early in the morning. This vibrant market in the heart of Old Town is where locals go for fresh produce, flowers, and artisanal goods. Grab a coffee at one of the nearby cafés and enjoy people-watching as the market comes to life. If you’re there on a Monday, you’ll find an antiques market instead, perfect for discovering unique treasures and souvenirs.

Day 2: Explore the French Riviera – Monaco & Èze
On the second day, venture along the coast to the glamorous principality of Monaco, just a short drive from Nice. Spend your morning exploring the opulent Prince’s Palace and the famous Monte Carlo Casino Square.
After soaking in the luxury of Monaco, head to the medieval village of Èze, perched high above the sea, one of my favorite towns in the South of France. The Jardin Exotique in Èze offers breathtaking panoramic views and a peaceful retreat.
Return to Nice in the evening and enjoy a nice French dinner and a walk afterwards! I love to take walks after dinner.

Day 3: Cannes & Antibes
Your third day on this South of France itinerary in 7 days takes you to the famous cities of Cannes and Antibes.
Start in Cannes, walking along the iconic Boulevard de la Croisette, where the annual film festival draws celebrities from around the world. The charm of Cannes lies not only in its glamorous events but also in its beautiful beaches and chic boutiques.
After a morning in Cannes, head to Antibes, a town known for its historic charm and artistic heritage. Visit the Picasso Museum, housed in the former Château Grimaldi, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon wandering through the old town’s cobbled streets. As evening falls, indulge in a traditional French dinner at a cozy bistro in Antibes. I think my favorite thing to do from Cannes is visiting the Calanques of the Esterel. Highly recommended experience!

Spend your morning exploring the Cours Mirabeau, a lively street filled with cafes and shops, and make sure to visit the local markets for a taste of Provençal life.
In the afternoon, delve into the artistic legacy of the region by visiting the Atelier Cézanne, where the famous painter once worked. A visit to the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, with its mix of architectural styles, is also a must.
End your day with a delicious dinner at a charming café, sampling local wines and traditional dishes.

Next, visit Roussillon, famous for its ochre cliffs and colorful houses. Take a walk through the Sentier des Ocres, a trail that winds through the unique red and orange landscape, offering a truly unique experience.
Return to Aix-en-Provence for a quiet evening, perhaps enjoying a glass of French wine! We recommend staying in Aix-en-Provence and coming here for a day trip.

Day 6: Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape – A Journey Through History and Wine
On the sixth day, drive to Avignon, a city steeped in history and once the seat of the papacy. Begin your day by exploring the Palais des Papes, one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe.
After touring the palace, take a walk on the Pont d’Avignon, made famous by the traditional French song.
In the afternoon, make your way to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a small town renowned for its exceptional wines. Enjoy a wine tour and tasting session at one of the local vineyards, where you can sample some of the best wines in the region.
Return to Avignon for a final dinner, savoring the flavors of Provence one last time.

The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, perched on a hill overlooking the city, offers stunning views and is a must-see landmark.
Depending on your departure time, you might also explore the Le Panier district, known for its vibrant street art and historic buildings, or take a short trip to the Calanques National Park, where dramatic limestone cliffs plunge into the azure waters of the Mediterranean.

The best time to visit the South of France is generally from May to September, when the weather is warm, the Mediterranean is perfect for swimming, and vineyards and lavender fields are in full bloom. July and August bring lively festivals and long sunny days but are also the busiest and most expensive months.
If you prefer fewer crowds and milder temperatures, May–June and September are ideal, perfect for sightseeing, coastal walks, and enjoying the charm of villages without the summer rush.
