How to get to Barcelona, Spain

✈️ Getting to Barcelona by Plane

Barcelona El Prat Airport is super well-connected to Spanish and European cities. I usually take the train from Madrid, but when I fly, I go with Iberia Airlines,  Iberia Express, Vueling, or Volotea. The airport is close to the city, so getting to the center is quick and easy (explained below.)

🚄 Getting to Barcelona By Train

The AVE high-speed train from Madrid to Barcelona takes about 2.5–3 hours. it’s super comfortable and reliable. I usually hop on at Atocha in Madrid, and before I know it, I’m at Estació de Sants. From there, it’s easy to take the metro or a quick taxi to the hotel.

🚌 Getting to Barcelona By Bus

Traveling on a budget? Long-distance buses from Spain and other European countries arrive at Estació del Nord. It’s the cheapest option, though slower than flying or taking the train. I usually purchase my bus tickets here.

⛴️ Getting to Barcelona By Ferry

Yes, you can actually arrive in Barcelona by ferry! There are regular routes from places like the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca. I like traveling with Balearia but there are many good ferry companies) and even from Italy (Genoa, Civitavecchia) or North Africa (Tangier, Nador). It’s a slower but scenic way to travel, especially fun if you’re bringing a car!

How to get from the airport to Barcelona city center

  • How to get from the airport to Barcelona city center:
    • Aerobús: A direct bus service that takes you from the airport to Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes.
    • Taxi: Takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. It’s usually a flat rate from the airport to the city center.
    • Metro: Line L9 Sud connects the airport with the city, and you can change at various stations for other lines.

Renting a car in Barcelona, Spain

🚗 Renting a car is another great idea if you want to explore at your own pace, especially the charming mountain villages in the Pyrenees, Barcelona province or Girona and secluded beaches in Costa Brava. I did this on my last trip and loved the freedom!

🚕 Private Transfer: If you prefer a private transfer, I usually use this company. The ride to the city center takes around 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Antigua Casa Buenavista is one of my favorite hotels in Barcelona. Set in a beautifully restored historic building in the heart of the old town and only some steps away from all the main sights, this unique hotel in Barcelona is right in the middle of everything you want to see! ME Barcelona has one of the best locations in town, just steps from Plaça Catalunya. The design is sleek and modern, with cool artwork throughout the hotel. Some rooms have open-glass showers into the main space (I love it but maybe your grandma would like to know this in advance, lol) and they’re very spacious. Obviously, you can’t miss the rooftop with gorgeous views and the pool!

It’s a luxurious stay in a 12th-century palace with lots of character and charm. The double sink and deep bathtubs, cozy bathrobes, and elegant breakfast setup make you feel very special. It is also a good hotel in Barcelona for families; I’ve recommended it to friends with kids and they loved it!

Hotel 1898 is right on La Rambla, so you’re in the middle of the action and perfect for walking to everything. The rooftop bar and pool are amazing, especially at sunset, and the spa downstairs is a huge bonus (pool, sauna, steam room…). It’s a smaller hotel but has everything you need, plus a great vibe!

Nobu Hotel Barcelona is a design-forward hotel near Sants station, convenient if you’re arriving by train. It is further away from the main sights though. Rooms are spacious and most have breathtaking views of the city.

Best Time of year to Visit Barcelona, Spain

The best time of year to visit Barcelona largely depends on what you’re looking to experience, but generally, spring (April to June) and fall (September to mid November) are ideal.

During these months, the weather is warm and pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), making it perfect for sightseeing and exploring outdoor markets without the intense summer heat. Plus, you’ll find fewer tourists compared to the peak summer months.

Summer (July to August) is also a popular time to visit if you love the beach scene and lively festivals like La Festa Major de Gràcia. However, temperatures can rise to around 30°C (86°F), and the city gets crowded with tourists. But I mean, it is also fun. If you vist in summer or shoulder months, you have to visit the Costa Brava too!

For those who prefer a quieter experience, winter (December to February) is cooler, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F). While swimming might not be on the agenda, it’s a great time for cultural experiences and local traditions like the Christmas markets.
