7 UNIQUE Riads in Fez for an Authentic Moroccan Experience
What is a Riad?
If you’ve been looking into places to stay in Fez, you’ve probably come across the word riad a lot.
So, what exactly is a riad? It’s basically a traditional Moroccan house with an inner courtyard, usually filled with plants, fountains, and a peaceful atmosphere. Sometimes they have a small pool too.
Most riads have just a few rooms, so it feels more personal and intimate than a big hotel. For me what makes it super authentic is that many have been beautifully restored and are run by local families, which makes your stay feel special.
I love riads and can't wait for you to read through my favorite UNIQUE riads in Fez in this list!

Getting to and Around Marrakech
How to get to Fez in Morocco
Fez has its own airport, FEZ, with direct flights from several European cities like Paris, Madrid, and Milan. It’s a small airport but well-connected if you're flying in from Europe. We usually fly with Iberia Airlines from Madrid!
If you are coming from Asia, we offer our readers 5% off on all Qatar Airways flights! This is awesome! Plus you can't miss this blog post about where to stay 1 day in Doha, Qatar, If I fly other airlines, I use this cheap flight searcher to book!
From the airport, you can grab a taxi or arrange a Private Transfer to your riad (it’s about 20–30 minutes to the medina).
If you're already in Morocco, you can reach Marrakech by train, bus, or car from cities like Marrakech (7 hours), Casablanca (around 3-4 hours), Rabat, or Tangier (4-5 hours). Trains are reliable and comfortable, and Supratours or CTM buses are great options for budget-friendly travel.
Getting to Fez By Private Transfer:
If you are coming from other cities in Morocco or you prefer a private transfer from the airport, you can hire a Private Transfer. While more expensive than the bus or the train (if coming from other cities), it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience,. This is what we often do when traveling in big groups or with family, although sometimes only 1 way, between cities.
We usually use this private transfers website to book, but in Morocco we can also recommend this trusted private transfer company that we used on our last trips and it always works well: Medtours. +212638774327 - medtoursmaroc.com.
Renting a Car in Morocco
Renting a car in Fez is totally doable, but it really depends on your travel plans. If you're staying mainly in the medina, you honestly don’t need a car, it’s pedestrian-only and super walkable (also easy to get lost in, but that’s part of the charm!).
But if you’re planning to explore the countryside, the Atlas Mountains, travel to other cities in Morocco, the Agafay Desert or nearby towns like Meknes or Ifrane, then a rental car gives you a lot of flexibility.
Make sure to bring your passport, a valid driver’s license, and a credit card.
Ready to hit the road? Book your car rental in Fez here and start your adventure today! Use our codes for major discounts on various companies: For a 10% off in OK mobility use this code: CJOKRAC. In Centauro we have a 15% discount and this is automatic. Yay!

Other Things to Know before visiting Fez, Morocco
𑁍 Best Time to Visit Fez, Morocco
If you're planning a trip to Fez, the best time to go is definitely spring or autumn, I would stay March to May and September to November or early December.
The weather is warm but not crazy hot, so you can actually enjoy walking around the medina and getting lost in the souks without melting.
I’d avoid summer unless you love serious heat, and winter can be a bit cold and gloomy, but I would prefer it over the summer.
Spring is especially lovely because everything’s blooming, and there are cool festivals going on too. It’s honestly the perfect time to soak up the magic of the city without the big crowds!
𑁍 Frequently Asked Questions about visiting Marrakech
1. Is Fez safe to visit?
Totally! Fez is safe for travelers, especially in the main areas like the medina and around your riad. Like any city, just keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded spots.
2. How many days should I spend in Fez?
I’d say give it 2 or 3 days. That’s enough time to wander through the medina, visit the tanneries, grab some amazing local food, and even squeeze in a hammam.
3. What makes Fez so special?
For me it’s like stepping a little back in time. The medina is a maze (in the best way), and it’s one of the oldest in the world. There’s so much craftsmanship, history, and raw, authentic energy. It feels way less touristy and more authentic than Marrakech.
4. What should I wear in Fez?
Fez is pretty traditional, so it’s best to dress modestly: loose, breathable clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. If you’re a woman, a lightweight scarf can be handy, even if you don’t need to cover your head.
5. Do people speak English in Fez?
Some do, especially in riads, restaurants, and touristy places, but French is more common. Arabic is the main language. Still, people are really accommodating, and you can get by with a mix of hand gestures and smiles!
Luxury Desert Camp Morocco - Is It Worth Spending the Night in the Agafay Desert?
