This is my first time in Munich, and I’ve absolutely loved visiting friends here and enjoying this lively city in the incredible mid-August warm weather.

We’ve explored so much, from cultural landmarks and museums to beautiful parks, and even taken a few day trips from the city. I’ll share all the details in the “Top Things to Do in Munich” section.

How to Get to Munich, Germany

Getting to Munich by Air

The fastest way to get to Munich is by flying into Munich International Airport. It has tons of direct flights from major European cities (and many long-haul destinations, too).

From Spain, I usually fly with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia. Once you land, you can take the S-Bahn (S1 or S8) and be right in the city center in about 40 minutes.

Getting to Munich by Train or Bus

If you’re already in Germany or traveling from somewhere nearby in Europe, the train is my favorite way to get to Munich. Munich Hauptbahnhof is the main station, and from there, you’re perfectly connected to the rest of the city. High-speed ICE trains run from Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and international cities like Vienna or Zurich. Last time I visited, in summer 2025, I arrived to Munich by train from Berlin 🙂

I use this app when I travel by train around Europe (even when going from country to country) and it is so easy!! I love having all my tickets in the same place.

For a budget-friendly option, buses like FlixBus run routes from cities across Germany and Europe. It’s usually the cheapest choice, though it usually takes longer than the train. I usually buy them in the same site where I buy my train tickets.

Getting Around Munich

Munich is one of those cities that feels best when explored at a slower pace. The Altstadt (Old Town) is super walkable, you’ll wander past beer gardens, charming squares, and very nice courtyards that make you want to linger a little longer.

Public transport is also very good and will take you just about anywhere in the city without needing a car.

  • If you’re up for something a little more active, cycling is one of my favorite ways to see Munich. The city is really bike-friendly, with plenty of paths that take you through English Garden, along the Isar River, or straight into different neighborhoods.
  • We always use the Call a Bike app when visiting Germany (not an affiliate link, just a recommendation because I love exploring cities by bike!), you can unlock a bike right from your phone, pick it up at one station, and drop it off at another!

Renting a Car in Munich, Germany

You definitely don’t need a car to get around Munich itself, the public transport and bikes will take you everywhere you want to go. But if you’re planning day trips or longer excursions into Bavaria, renting a car can be such a good idea. Trains are usually reliable, but buses (especially FlixBus…) can sometimes be delayed, we had a pretty bad experience once!

Having your own car just gives you more freedom and peace of mind. Plus, it’s the best way to explore at your own pace, whether that’s driving through the Bavarian Alps, stopping at little lakeside villages, or visiting castles like Neuschwanstein without being tied to timetables.

Gästehaus Englischer Garten is hands down one of my favorite boutique hotels in Munich! The location is unbeatable, right by the Englischer Garten, with a peaceful little river, birds singing, and a huge, lovely garden where kids can run around. The building has so much charm, that 60s cozy vibe, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The staff are super welcoming, and you’re just steps from cute cafés, bars, and restaurants. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat!

The rooms are gorgeous, the food is amazing (breakfast is a treat, and the brasserie patio is perfect for dinner), and the staff are incredibly warm and attentive. Just a little heads-up: the bathrooms are open-style!

Best Time of year to Visit one of the Unique Boutique hotels in Munich

The best time to visit Munich really depends on what you want to experience:

  • Spring (April to June) is perfect for sightseeing, exploring the city’s parks, and enjoying outdoor cafés without the big summer crowds.
  • Summer (July to August) is the most popular time to visit, with warm weather, beer gardens in full swing, and day trips to lakes like Eibsee at their best.
  • If you want to experience Oktoberfest, plan your trip for late September to early October, but book your boutique hotel in Munich well in advance because the city gets very busy.
  • Winter (December to February) is ideal if you love Christmas markets, festive lights, and cozy boutique hotels, plus you can combine your trip with skiing in the nearby Alps.
