I’m from Madrid, but thanks to a very good friend’s event in Germany, we have been on a month-long train trip around Europe this month, hopping from city to city, from Frankfurt, to Berlin, to Munich, beautiful castle hotels in Bavaria and now Salzburg.

This has been my first time in the south of Germany, and I’ve absolutely loved visiting friends there and enjoying the lively atmosphere in the incredible mid-August warm weather. We have been very lucky!

After Munich, we have crossed into Austria and have spent a full week in Salzburg. It couldn’t have been a better time to visit, the city was buzzing with the famous Salzburg Festival, the streets alive with music and culture.

We balanced the energy of the festival with peaceful day trips into the surrounding mountains and lakes (more details on this day trips below), and took plenty of time to wander the charming Old Town and all the Sound of Music film locations.

Everywhere I travel, as you know, I make it a point to seek out the most beautiful places to stay, and Salzburg was no exception. That’s why I’ve put together this list of the 9 most remarkable boutique hotels in Salzburg that truly capture the magic of the city. Keep reading to find out!

How to Get to Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is really well connected, so getting here is quite easy whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or car.

Getting to Salzburg by Air

Salzburg has its own airport (Salzburg W.A. Mozart Airport), just a 15-minute drive or bus ride from the city center. It’s small, but you’ll find direct flights from many European cities.

If you’re coming from further away, Munich Airport is a bigger hub and only about two hours away by train or car. There are no direct flights from Madrid, so we usually arrive by train. I fly to Munich with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia. Then I take the train to Salzburg.

Getting to Salzburg by Train and Bus

One of the most comfortable ways to arrive, and my favorite, is by train. Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) has frequent connections to Munich (about 1h 30m), Vienna (about 2h 30m), and other Austrian and German cities. The scenery along the way is gorgeous, you’ll pass through rolling hills, lakes, and alpine landscapes.

I use this app when I travel by train around Europe (even when going from country to country) and it is so easy!! I love having all my tickets in the same place.

For a cheaper option, buses like FlixBus have tons of routes into Salzburg from all over Austria and Europe. It’s usually the most budget-friendly way to travel, though it does take longer than the train. I usually buy them in the same site where I buy my train tickets.

Getting to Salzburg by Car and Private Transfer

If you want flexibility for day trips, driving is a great option too. Salzburg is about 1h 30m from Munich and 3h from Vienna. The roads are excellent, and having a car makes it easier to explore the nearby lakes, mountains, and castles. Just keep in mind that parking in the Old Town can be tricky, so many travelers leave their car at a hotel or use one of the park-and-ride options.

Getting Around Salzburg

Salzburg is a compact city, which makes getting around really easy. Most of the main sights, like the Old Town, Mirabell Palace, and Mozart’s birthplace, are within walking distance. We loved wandering the streets on foot, it’s the best way to soak in the baroque architecture and charming squares.

For longer trips or if you’re staying outside the city center, public transport is reliable and convenient. Buses and trams cover all the main areas, and a day pass makes it easy to hop on and off. I was impressed to see how many trams and buses are around the city!

Renting a Car in Salzburg

We decided to rent a car for a few days during our stay in Salzburg, and it was one of the best decisions we made. While the city itself is easy to explore on foot or by public transport, renting a car gave us the freedom to take day trips to the surrounding mountains, lakes, and charming towns at our own pace.

Having our own car also made it easier to visit some of the most magical spots in the Bavarian Alps and Austrian countryside that are harder to reach by public transport, like Eagle’s Nest.

  • For us, this combination of walking in the city and driving outside of it was the perfect way to experience Salzburg and its surroundings.

If you’re looking for the best boutique hotels in Salzburg, the Design Hotel zum Hirschen is Salzburgs oldest family-run hotel (we love this) and one of my favorites! It’s set in a historic building from the 1500s, but the interiors have been completely redone by local architects so it feels cool and fresh.

You’ll find a spa, gym, bar, a really good breakfast spot, and even a garden where you can sit outside in the mornings. Plus, if you’re deciding where to stay in Salzburg, the location couldn’t be better, just steps from the train station and only a 20-minute walk (or quick bus ride) into the old town.

This one is our favorite because we actually stayed here for a night—mainly because of The Sound of Music. It was such a fun experience, the staff were really kind, and the setting is just stunning. Scenes from the movie were filmed right on site, and breakfast in the palace dining room (or outside on the balcony with lake views) feels unreal.

The hotel is split between the Meierhof building and the actual palace, and staying here means you get access to spaces like the library and chapel. Leopoldskron Palace is privately owned, not open to the public and also the Salzburg Festival was founded here! Honestly, walking around the grounds felt like stepping into a movie, we loved every second and I felt like a princess!
