I’m from Madrid, but thanks to a very good friend's event here in Germany, we’re on a month-long train trip around the country right now, hopping from city to city. This is my first time in Munich, and I’ve absolutely loved visiting friends here and enjoying this lively city in the incredible mid-August warm weather.
To make the most of our stay, we rented a car and explored the beautiful Bavaria region, taking day trips from Munich to fairytale towns, lakes, and castles that look like they’ve been lifted from a storybook.
Along the way, I couldn’t resist seeking out some of the most unique places to stay—historic castles turned into boutique or fortress hotels, where you can actually sleep like royalty.

How to Get to Munich, Germany
By Air: The fastest way to get to Munich is by flying into Munich International Airport. It has tons of direct flights from major European cities (and many long-haul destinations, too). From Spain, I usually fly with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia. Once you land, you can take the S-Bahn (S1 or S8) and be right in the city center in about 40 minutes.
By Train: If you’re already in Germany—or traveling from somewhere nearby in Europe—the train is my favorite way to get to Munich. Munich Hauptbahnhof is the main station, and from there, you’re perfectly connected to the rest of the city.. High-speed ICE trains run from Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and international cities like Vienna or Zurich. I use this app when I travel by train around Europe (even when crossing countries)—it keeps all my tickets in one place, which I love.
By Bus: For a cheaper option, buses like FlixBus have tons of routes into Munich from all over Germany and Europe. It’s usually the most budget-friendly way to travel, though it does take longer than the train. I often buy them in the same app where I buy my train tickets or here, a cheap bus tickets site that works well!

Munich is one of those cities that feels best when explored at a slower pace. The Altstadt (Old Town) is super walkable—you’ll wander past beer gardens, charming squares, and very nice courtyards that make you want to linger a little longer. Public transport is also very good and will take you just about anywhere in the city without needing a car.
If you’re up for something a little more active, cycling is one of my favorite ways to see Munich. The city is really bike-friendly, with plenty of paths that take you through English Garden, along the Isar River, or straight into different neighborhoods. We always use the Call a Bike app when visiting Germany (not an affiliate link, just a recommendation because I love exploring cities by bike!)—you can unlock a bike right from your phone, pick it up at one station, and drop it off at another!
Getting Around Bavaria
We spent 10 days in Bavaria, and honestly, the mix of landscapes, castles, and charming towns here makes it one of the most special regions in Germany I’ve ever visited. To make the most of it, we combined different ways of getting around, and it worked out perfectly.
From Munich, we joined a couple of day excursions through GetYourGuide, which were a great way to see highlights without worrying about planning.
We also took advantage of Germany’s efficient train system for easy connections to places like Nuremberg and Regensburg — the Bayern Ticket was especially useful for unlimited day travel.
But the best part? Renting a car. Having our own wheels gave us the freedom to explore the Bavarian countryside at our own pace, from fairytale castles to mountain lakes that weren't so easy to reach from the main routes. The scenic drives themselves felt like part of the adventure!
In the end, this combination — day tours, trains, and road trips — let us experience Bavaria from every angle, without missing anything.

Renting a Car in Munich and the Bavaria region
You definitely don’t need a car to get around Munich itself—the public transport and bikes will take you everywhere you want to go. But if you’re planning day trips or longer excursions into Bavaria, renting a car can be such a good idea. Trains are usually reliable, but buses (especially FlixBus…) can sometimes be delayed—we had a pretty bad experience once!
Having your own car just gives you more freedom and peace of mind. Plus, it’s the best way to explore at your own pace, whether that’s driving through the Bavarian Alps, stopping at little lakeside villages, or visiting castles like Neuschwanstein without being tied to timetables. If you want something really special near Munich, Schloss Mörlbach is one of my favorite castle hotels in Bavaria. It feels like stepping into a little fairytale. It’s a beautiful country manor–style estate with fresh flowers, a huge garden full of animals, and even local farm milk for your morning coffee. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and the kitchens have everything you need if you feel like cooking. Families love it here thanks to the space, toys, and swings for kids, while couples enjoy the peace, charm, and romantic atmosphere. If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping in a castle, Schloss Raitenbuch in Kallmünz is the real deal! The rooms are beautifully renovated with lots of artistic touches and thoughtful details, and the whole place has such a warm feel thanks to the wonderful hosts and. owners. Breakfast is served at the table (sometimes even on the terrace) and will be one of the best you will ever have. The castle sits right in the middle of the village, so you can wander along the Naab river, explore the charming town, or take day trips to Regensburg. 3. BURG RABENSTEIN
Kirchahorn, Bavaria, Germany

If you love historic buildings and have always wanted to stay in a real castle, you have to stay at Burg Rabenstein! The location is absolutely stunning, right in the middle of nature with hiking trails, caves to explore, and even a falconry show. The rooms are really comfortable, the restaurant is excellent, and breakfast is a proper feast. You can wander around the castle, join a tour to learn about its history (although mostly in German), or just enjoy the middle ages atmosphere and views. If you’re into castles but also appreciate really good food, Schloss Hohenstein is the castle in Bavaria where you need to stay! It’s a 700-year-old castle, beautifully kept and with all the character you’d expect. The restaurant is a highlight, every dish is spot on, and the wine selection is excellent. Breakfast is just as impressive. The rooms are spacious and very authentic, and the setting is super peaceful, surrounded by nature. If you ever wanted to stay somewhere with real history but also total peace, Kloster Seeon is it. It’s a beautifully restored old monastery, sitting right on a little lake surrounded by nature. The setting is super calm, perfect for swimming, walking, or just sitting by the water. Breakfast is excellent, with local touches like honey and pretzels, and the whole place has this special atmosphere that feels both historic and spiritual. Perfect for families too! Naturschlosshotel Blumenthal is one of those castle hotels in that just feels different in the best way. It’s an old castle that’s been brought back to life with a really relaxed, community feel. There are goats and donkeys wandering around, kids have plenty of space to play, and the whole vibe is easygoing and a bit quirky. The rooms are cozy, the food is really good and it’s the kind of spot where you instantly slow down and just enjoy being there. From Munich: Premium Neuschwanstein Castle & Linderhof Tour – Step straight into a fairytale with King Ludwig’s dreamy castles, surrounded by the Bavarian Alps—it’s just breathtaking. If you prefer a private tour, I recommend this one.
From Munich: Guided Group Tour to Eagle’s Nest – A fascinating blend of history and breathtaking alpine views—being up there feels absolutely surreal. I took this trip myself with my boyfriend and was blown away by the scenery (and so lucky with the weather!); it’s such an interesting experience.
From Munich: Day Trip to Lake Eibsee – Hands down my favorite—when I went for my birthday in August, I couldn’t believe how stunning it was! The water is crystal clear, the walk around the lake is magical, and yes, I even swam (and it wasn’t that cold!). Truly the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. Highly recommended!
𑁍 Best Time of year to Visit one of the Unique Castle Hotels in Bavaria
Bavaria is beautiful year-round, but when you go can totally shape your experience. We visited in mid-August, and the weather was perfect — warm, sunny days, lively outdoor cafés, and lots of events and festivals. It made exploring Munich and taking day trips around the region really enjoyable.
Spring (April–June): Everything starts to bloom, the countryside is lush and green, and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Perfect for scenic drives and castle visits.
Summer (July–August): Warm weather, long days, and vibrant festivals. This is ideal if you want to combine city life in Munich with day trips to lakes, castles, and mountains — just be ready for more crowds at top tourist spots.
Autumn (September–October): The foliage in the Bavarian Alps and countryside is stunning, and Oktoberfest in Munich is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Slightly cooler weather, but fewer crowds after the festival.
Winter (December–February): Magical if you love Christmas markets and snow-capped castles. The Alps are perfect for skiing and winter sports. Just be prepared for cold temperatures.
✨ My take: Summer is perfect if you love warm weather and want to maximize sightseeing, outdoor activities and day trips to lakes like Eibsee, but spring and autumn are wonderful for quieter trips and beautiful scenery.
