Tenerife is the island I’ve returned to the most in the Canary Islands, and my favorite together with Lanzarote. Over the years, I’ve visited both with friends and for work, and every trip has given me the chance to explore a different side of the island.


From the volcanic landscapes of Teide to charming old towns and less touristy coastal spots, I feel like I’ve uncovered nearly every corner of Tenerife.


And one thing I’ve learned along the way is that where you stay can completely shape your experience.

How to Get to Tenerife, Spain

By Air:

Getting to Tenerife is very easy, as the island has two international airports:

  • Tenerife North Airport, closer to Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

  • Tenerife South Airport, the largest one, handling most international flights, especially from Europe.


If you’re flying from Spain or Europe, you’ll find plenty of direct connections from major cities in Spain like Madrid, Mallorca, Ibiza or Barcelona, and London, Berlin, and Paris in Europe. From Madrid, the flight takes about 3 hours, while from most European capitals it’s around 4–5 hours. I usually fly with Iberia Express, Vueling, Volotea and Iberia. when coming from mainland Spain.


By Ferry:

Another option is arriving by ferry from mainland Spain (Cadiz or Huelva), though it’s a much longer journey—about 36–40 hours—and usually chosen by travelers who want to bring their own car.


If you’re already in the Canary Islands, getting to Tenerife by ferry is very easy. There are regular and quick crossings from La Gomera, La Palma, and Gran Canaria, making it perfect if you’re island-hopping. The shortest route is just 50 minutes from La Gomera to Tenerife, while longer routes from Lanzarote or Fuerteventura are great if you’re traveling with a car or campervan.


Getting Around and Renting a Car in Tenerife

I’ve always rented a car every time I’ve visited Tenerife, and honestly, it’s the best way to get around the island.


Public transport works well for towns and short routes, but with a car, you have the freedom to explore less touristy beaches, mountain villages, and Teide National Park at your own pace.


Driving is easy, roads are in good condition, and parking is usually straightforward outside the busiest tourist spots. If you want to truly experience every corner of Tenerife, I definitely recommend renting a car.

It is a cozy little stone house built 200 years ago and used as an old winery, and a refuge for the peasants who worked the land, mainly cultivating vines. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay in the Canary Islands, Punta Paradiso in Punta del Hidalgo is one of the cutest boutique hotels in Tenerife, right on the beach with amazing sea views. You can lounge by the pool, wander through the garden, or just sit on your balcony listening to the waves. The rooms are comfy and spacious and the breakfasts are homemade and delicious. If you’re heading to Puerto de la Cruz, San Felipe Suites is one of the sweetest boutique hotels in Tenerife (well, technically a stylish apartment, but it feels more like a hotel!). We stayed at Platanera Suites in 2023 and really loved both the hotel and the town of Icod de los Vinos. The rooms are cool yet cozy and authentic, with plenty of space and some even have a rooftop terrace with great views. Being right next to a banana plantation gave it a local charm that made it feel more like unique experience. Looking for really local and authentic boutique hotels in Tenerife, we also stayed in San Roque back in 2023. and loved both the hotel and the town of Garachico. The building has beautiful traditional Canarian character with wood details, spacious rooms, and a very calm atmosphere. The staff are exceptional: warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful and the food at the restaurant is excellent, definitely worth having dinner there at least once. There’s a small pool, sauna, and rooftop terrace that’s perfect for sunsets, and while the vibe is very quiet (some might say almost too quiet if you like more buzz), it’s exactly what makes it such a relaxing place to stay.
